Winford Colson, Corinth mayor
Mayor Winford L. "Tootie" Colson was a man who cared about Corinth, Ky., a community he had led for four years.
Mr. Colson, 77, a retired freight checker with Consolidated Freightways in Cincinnati, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
"This will be a big loss to the community. He truly tried to do for the people of Corinth," said Grant County Magistrate Richard Austin.
Mr. Colson retired in 1977 from Consolidated Freightways and had been mayor of the Grant County city since 1992, said his wife, Wanda Mulligan Colson.
He had served on the Corinth City Council and as commissioner of the Corinth Water District. He helped organize the water district for the area in 1982, his wife said. He also served on the Grant County 911 Board.
Mr. Colson's nickname, which many people knew him by, went back to his childhood, Mrs. Colson said. As she understood it, he would visit a neighbor lady nicknamed "Tootie," and soon became "Little Tootie." Later the "Little" was dropped.
He was a native of Keefer, only a few miles from Corinth.
He was a member of Corinth Christian Church, where he was a deacon, choir member and an elder.
He also was a member of Grant County Men for Christ.
Other survivors include six sons, eight daughters, a stepson, four brothers, six sisters, 29 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
