"Ceil' Janson ran church store

Cecilia "Ceil" Emmett Janson was the mother of Channel 9 sports anchor Dennis Janson, and, like her famous son, she had a loyal following around Cincinnati.

As a co-founder of Trinity Church Supply Co. in Price Hill 31 years ago, she impressed customers with her helpfulness and faith. She sold many children's First Communion rosaries and veils. Priests and ministers would seek her counsel when giving religious-oriented gifts.

Mrs. Janson died Sunday after a fall while in Michigan for a wedding. She was 76.

She was born Nov. 6, 1920, in Cincinnati and attended Mt. Notre Dame High School. She later worked for Western-Southern Life Insurance Co. before founding Trinity with her husband, Harry. She continued as proprietor after Harry's death in 1972 until she retired in August.

"She was a lot of people's spiritual mother, in many respects," Janson said. "This was one of her favorite times of year because of First Communions."

A week before she died, she saw an event she had long anticipated - the First Communion of her 8-year-old granddaughter, Sarah Cunningham. She loved to spend time with Sarah and her brother, Michael.

"She loved to go to church," Janson said. "Her faith was just - you hope something like that is contagious."

Also surviving are a son, Terry; daughter, Marlene Cunningham; and a brother, Jack Emmett, all of Cincinnati.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Teresa of Avila Church in Price Hill. Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Friday at Meyer & Geiser Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Ceil Janson Scholarship Fund, St. Rita School for the Deaf, 1720 Glendale-Milford Road, 45215.

Ruth Haglage, overcame adversity

Ruth Haglage was adept at handling adversity.

After her fiance was blinded in an industrial accident, she became his "eyes" through 47 years of marriage. She lost a son in the Vietnam War and suffered breast cancer but was one of her community's most active and prominent volunteers.

Mrs. Haglage, 81, of Batavia, died Monday.

She and her husband, the late Walter Haglage, raised 10 children.

"Her career was her family and there was nobody better," says her son, Mark Haglage. "She had to play a very large role in the development of the family and the guidance of the kids because dad was blind. She was basically his eyes."

The Clermont County Vietnam War Memorial was named after son Andrew, who was killed in the Vietnam War.

Mrs. Haglage frequently volunteered at Clermont Mercy Hospital and Holy Trinity Church. Her hobby was baking and she loved to deliver homemade bread to people throughout Batavia.

"She was a very outgoing person who enjoyed lending a hand to people," Mark Haglage said.

Survivors: sons Theodore, Daniel, Michael, Walter, Richard and Harry; daughters Mary Celmer and Peggy Strohmaier; and 26 grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Church in Batavia. Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the E.C. Nurre Funeral Home in Amelia. Memorials may be made to the Brown County Ursulines Emergency Relief Fund.

L. Spinner, helped kids overseas

While Louis B. Spinner served as a U.S. Army major in Paris during World War II, he devised a scheme to get much-needed clothing and shoes from the families of American soldiers to French children.

Mr. Spinner would obtain liquor from the nearby English military and trade it to members of his command. In return, his soldiers would have their families send clothes and shoes to them and they gave it to the major.

He managed his makeshift relief effort with the help of two members of The Post staff at the time, Bev Ewald and Eleanor Bell.

For more than 30 years, Mr. Spinner also operated the Spinner Tile and Marble Co. in Dent with his two brothers, Walter J. Spinner and Lawrence N. Spinner.

Mr. Spinner, originally of Cheviot, died May 2 at the Sunrise Manor Nursing Home. He was 84. He lived in Union Township, Clermont County, before moving into the nursing home.

Survivors include two sisters, Estelle Ehrman of Park Hills, Ky., and Rita Leinenbrink of Lake Placid, Fla.
