Auto dealer Joseph Stillpass
Long before the auto mall concept came into fashion, Joseph Stillpass was an innovator of what he called a "department store of cars."
While today's auto mall is a cluster of buildings - each handling a different manufacturer's automotive line - Mr. Stillpass and his brother, Stanford, offered different makers' cars under the same roof.
"He thought it was a great idea to go to one place and have more than one car to choose from," said his son, Andrew Stillpass.
Joseph Stillpass died Thursday of cancer in West Palm Beach, Fla. He was 77.
Mr. Stillpass, an avid motorcyclist, signed on early - in 1972 - to sell Honda cars. If Honda could make such problem-free motorcycles, he theorized, it likely would be successful with automobiles.
Mr. Stillpass, who grew up in North Avondale, was a partner in Lenox Motors from 1946 until 1959. In 1960 the two brothers opened Stillpass Lincoln-Mercury. They later opened Stillpass Volvo and Stillpass Honda.
The graduate of Walnut Hills High School and the University of Cincinnati served as an officer in the Navy in World War II and was decorated.
Mr. Stillpass also leaves his wife, Sylvia Miller Stillpass; daughter, Nancy Stillpass of New York City; sister, Adele Katz of Amberley Village, and a granddaughter.
Arrangements were through Weil Funeral Home, North Avondale. Memorials: American Cancer Society or donor's favorite charity.
