Rev. Edward Volker, rural pastor

The Rev. Edward H. Volker was parish priest to several rural Catholic churches in southern Ohio in his 44 years of ministry.

Father Volker, 82, pastor emeritus of Visitation Church in Eaton, died Friday at the Franciscan at St. Clare.

"Among other things, Father Volker was well known for the annual Christmas lights display at Visitation," said the Rev. Christopher Armstrong, chancellor of the archdiocese.

Father Volker studied at St. Gregory and Mount St. Mary's seminaries in Cincinnati and was ordained to the priesthood June 7, 1941, by then-Archbishop John T. McNicholas.

He began his ministry as associate pastor of Assumption Church in Walnut Hills. From 1942 to 1947, he taught at Elder High School and was assistant chaplain at St. Mary's and Good Samaritan hospitals in Cincinnati.

From 1947 to 1953, he served St. Martin and Holy Ghost churches in Brown County. He was appointed assistant pastor of St. Agnes Church in Bond Hill in 1955, serving there until 1958.

He became pastor of St. Mary Church in Arnheim and administrator of St. Elizabeth Church in Sardinia in 1958.

In 1962, he was appointed rector of Visitation Church and administrator of St. John Church in New Paris. He retired as pastor emeritus in 1985.

Reception of the body will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Visitation Church in Eaton. Visitation will follow until 8 p.m.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will follow at Mount Hill Union Cemetery in Eaton.

Services in Walton for Brian Pillman

Services are Friday for former Cincinnati Bengal Brian W. Pillman, 35, of Walton, Ky.

He died Sunday in a Minneapolis hotel. The cause of his death is being investigated.

He was a professional wrestler with the World Wrestling Federation and World Championship Wrestling, and also played professional football for the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League, and the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League. He was a member of Walton Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Melanie Lawrence Pillman; a son, Brian Zachary Pillman of Walton; daughters, Danielle Pillman of Cincinnati and Brittany Pillman of Walton; his mother, Mary Pillman of Norwood; brother, Philip Pillman of Norwood; and sisters, Linda Pillman of Norwood, Angie Chamberlain of Bethel, and Susan Wermes of Mason.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Walton. Cremation will be at Baxter Cremation Co., Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to Shriners Burns Institute, 3229 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229.

Stith Funeral Home, Florence, Ky. is handling arrangements.

Emmett D. Gourley, CB radio buff

Emmett D. Gourley earned his nickname "kilowatt" because of a lifelong fascination with citizen band radios.

For years, he was a member of the  Jefferson County Alert, an Indiana group that assists county authorities when emergencies occurred.

Mr. Gourley, 76, of Madison, Ind., died Tuesday.

When he wasn't seated in front of his CB radio, Mr. Gourley worked in maintenance for the Public Service of Indiana. He also had worked for Meese, Inc., as an assembler for many years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Madison and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors: his wife, Mildred; a stepson, Steven L. Fritter, of Madison; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. EST Saturday at Morgan-Webster-Nay Funeral Home, Madison. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials: Appalachian Christian Science Mission.

Marie Brown, hospital planner
Marie Brown played a key role in bringing four hospitals - Christ, University, St. Luke and Jewish - into the Health Alliance. She also oversaw major changes at University Hospital, where she was administrator for planning and marketing.

Ms. Brown, 45, of New Richmond, died Wednesday at Anderson Mercy Hospital after a nine-year bout with lupus. She served in various functions at University for 14 years before becoming vice president of planning for the Health Alliance in 1995.

At University, where she last served as associate administrator, she implemented the hospital's multi-million building program and guided such projects as the development of the Barrett Cancer Center, the Critical Care Tower, the Medical Arts Building, the parking garages and the upgrade of the Martin Luther King entrance.

She was the 1991 recipient of the Delbert L. Pugh Award for outstanding leadership and substantial achievement in hospital planning and marketing. The award is given by the Society for Hospital Planning and Marketing of the Ohio Hospital Association.

Born in New Jersey, she had a bachelor's degree in nursing from Georgetown University and a masters degree in public health from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She published numerous national and local articles on planning and marketing.

She met her future husband at Georgetown and while he went to law school she worked as a public health nurse in rural Tennessee. She came to Cincinnati because of her husband and took a job at CORVA, a regional health planning agency.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Columban Church, 894 Oakland Road, Loveland. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at E.C. Nurre Funeral Home, Ohio 125, Amelia.

Ms. Brown leaves her husband, John Woliver, a well-known Batavia attorney; a daughter, Katie Woliver, and a son, Michael Woliver.

Memorials may be made to the charity of choice.
