West Shell was 'Mr. Real Estate'
Firm's founder known for ethical standards
Post staff report

West Shell Jr. was "Mr. Real Estate" in Greater Cincinnati.

His name was synonymous with local real estate for nearly half a century and the real estate firm that bears his name four decades after he founded it remains a major force in the industry.

"West made a big impact on real estate and on everybody he met," said Mark Rippe, president of West Shell Realtors. "He was intelligent, hard-working and a stickler for high standards, ethics and integrity. There's no doubt he was 'Mr. Real Estate."'

"West never minced words about how he felt and what he wanted to do," said Bonnie Casper, president of the Cincinnati Area Board of Realtors. "He stood behind his words and made things happen. He will be sorely missed."

Mr. Shell, 75, of Hyde Park, died Sunday.

While the company name West Shell is very familiar to the general public, some people are unaware that the firm took its name from one person.

"A lot of people didn't know that West Shell was only one person," said Rippe. "When people discovered there really was a West Shell, they were surprised."

A graduate of Asheville School, Dartmouth College and the Tuck School of Business, Mr. Shell was a Marine Corps lieutenant during World War II.

After the war, he began a career in real estate and was elected president of the Cincinnati Area Board of Realtors in 1955.

In 1958, at the age of 36, Mr. Shell became the youngest president of the Ohio Board of Realtors. It was also in 1958 that he started his real estate company in Mariemont with only two employees.

He built his company into the area's largest real estate firm, with thriving residential and commercial divisions.

Today, West Shell employs more than 1,000 people and boasts annual sales of more than $1 billion.

Mr. Shell sold the company in 1985, but continued to serve as chairman of the board until 1991, when the company was re-sold to Nisbet Corp. and he became chairman emeritus.

Besides overseeing a vibrant business, Mr. Shell was very active in numerous community projects. He served as chairman of the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce and chaired the Advisory Committee of Beech Acres social services agency. He also was involved with United Appeal, American Red Cross, Hoxworth Blood Center and the Juvenile Diabetes. Foundation.

He also was a member of the Year 2000 review committee that updated the city's downtown development plan in 1990.

He was "Realtor of the Year" in 1956 and 1976.

Mr. Shell endowed the University of Cincinnati by establishing the West Shell Jr. Professorship of Real Estate. A memorial fund has been established at UC by the company to continue the real estate program.

Away from real estate and community work, Mr. Shell enjoyed traveling, playing golf and reading.

Mr. Shell is survived by his wife, Judith; his children, Sarah Shell of Cincinnati, Barbara Estevez of Tallahassee, Fla., Dorothy Weir of Conyers, Ga., West Shell III of San Francisco; step children Judith Joslin and Allen Joslin, and eight grandchildren.

His brother Robert and sister Virginia reside in New Mexico. His brother Richard preceded him in death.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of the Redeemer, 2944 Erie Ave., Hyde Park. There will be no visitation. The Elden A. Good Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, Mr. Shell's family suggests donations to any of three charities: Hospice at Mercy St. Teresa Center; West Shell Jr. Memorial Fund in care of the University of Cincinnati Foundation or the Juvenile Diabetes. Foundation.
