Louella "Miss Lou' Myers, loving mother

Louella Turner Myers, who turned her love of preparing meals for her family into a livelihood by cooking for school children, died Friday at her Avondale home following an extended illness.

Mrs. Myers, affectionately known as "Miss Lou," was a longtime Cincinnatian. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She enjoyed cooking, her family said, and eventually became a cook at St. Joseph School. She later became a certified child care worker.

Most of Mrs. Myers' life revolved around her family, and she saw all four of her children earn college degrees. A West End resident most of her life, she only recently moved to Avondale.

She leaves sons, Reginald Myers of Colorado and George Myers Jr. of Cincinnati; daughters, Sister Janet Saunders of the Order of St. Ursula, and Brenda Grier, both of Cincinnati; a sister, Willa Franklin of Cincinnati; brothers, Spencer E. Turner, Jack W. Turner, Paul C. Turner and Alvin O. Turner, all of Cincinnati; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mass: 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Church, West End. Visitation: 5 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Arrangements: Jamison & Jamison Funeral Home, West End.

David Alden, respected leader at Miami U

David C. Alden, 84, director of financial affairs emeritus at Miami University, died Friday.

Mr. Alden graduated from Kent State University and came to Miami in 1937 as a graduate assistant and assistant head resident of Fisher Hall. He received an MBA from Miami in 1939.

Mr. Alden was Miami's bursar and then controller until 1972, when he was named director of financial affairs. He also was an instructor in accounting for several years. He retired in 1976.

He was treasurer of Miami's alumni association from 1947-89 and received its A.K. Morris Award. In 1976, Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity conferred its Order of Merit on Mr. Alden. He also was a deacon at United Presbyterian Church of Oxford.

He was married to Geraldine Quimby for 58 years. In 1976, the couple was honored as Miami's Parents of the Year.

He also leaves sons, Larry Alden of Strongsville, Ohio, and Edward Alden of Orange Park Fla., and five grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Oxford Presbyterian Church. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Smith & Ogle Funeral Home, Oxford.

Calvin Madsen, Reading sports fan

Calvin A. Madsen of Reading, a member of the Quarter-Century Club of the General Electric Co., died Tuesday.

Mr. Madsen, 70, also was an active backer of Reading High School athletics.

His daughter, Carol Madsen Miller, is a former baseball star at Reading and at Xavier University. Mrs. Miller now is girls' baseball coach at Finneytown High School.

A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, Mr. Madsen is survived by his wife, Ruth J. Martin Madsen; sons John, Thomas and Michael Madsen; and daughter, Mary Madsen Shaw.

Mass: 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Peter and Paul Church, Reading. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Schmidt-Dhonau Funeral Home, Reading.

Sister Mary Rosario Berning, teacher

Sister Mary Rosario Berning was a gentle home economics teacher who taught her students to "use the heart, not just the head," said a longtime friend, Sister Marie Antoine Humpert.

Sister Mary Rosario died Monday at Mother Margaret Hall nursing home in Delhi Township. She was 88.

"She loved to tell stories, and she always had a twinkle in her eye," said Sister Marie Antoine.

The native Cincinnatian taught primary grades for 15 years at schools in Xenia, Norwood, Cincinnati, Springfield, Ohio, and Michigan.

Among her secondary school assignments was Seton High School in Price Hill and St. Mary School in Hyde Park.

She had served as president and vice president of the Cincinnati Archdiocesan Home Economics Association.

Mass was today.
