Victor Mills, developed Pampers

Victor Mills didn't like changing his grandchildren's cloth diapers, according to Procter & Gamble Co. folklore.

So in the 1950s, he ordered his team at P&G to come up with something better.

Forty years later, the disposable paper diapers that Mr. Mills helped to create are used in nearly every home with babies in the United States.

Mr. Mills died Saturday in Tucson, Ariz., where he had moved after his retirement from P&G in Cincinnati. He was 100. At his request, no services are planned, according to the Arizona Daily Star.

Mr. Mills, a chemical engineer at Cincinnati-based P&G from 1926 until 1961, played a major role in developing Pampers disposable diapers, Pringles potato chips, Duncan Hines' cake mix milling process and Jif peanut butter formulations.

In 1990, P&G created an award to honor company innovators. The award was named the Victor Mills Society.

Scott Stewart, public affairs manager for P&G, said Mr. Mills' death is a loss to the company, which recently honored Mr. Mills during the 35th birthday celebration of Pampers.

"He really has come to symbolize the innovation that has made our company what it is today and also will take us to where we want to go tomorrow," Stewart said. "He was an extraordinary man."

According to the P&G history, the first test marketing of Mr. Mills' work was done in 1957 and failed because Dallas was selected for the test market. The design, a pleated pad inside a plastic panty, was too hot for the babies in Texas weather.

Another try was launched in 1959 in Rochester, N.Y. This time the hand-sewn product was successful.

Mr. Mills was born in Milford, Neb., and served in the Navy in World War I. In 1926, he received a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Washington and went to work for P&G.

He leaves a wife, Ruth of Tucson; a daughter, Maile Cuddy of Santa Fe, N.M.; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Mary Yeiser, began program at Country Day

Anyone who passed through Cincinnati Country Day's pre-primary school program from the late 1940s on has Mary M. Yeiser of Indian Hill to thank.

Mrs. Yeiser died Saturday morning in her home following a long illness. She was 76.

When the school dropped its pre-primary school because it couldn't fill the classes, Mrs. Yeiser created a nonprofit organization, complete with its own board and teachers, to teach her children and others.

"She wanted our kids to have a pre-primary school, so she created one," said her husband, Charles F. Yeiser, who at the time was an English teacher at Cincinnati Country Day, and later became its headmaster. About four years later, Cincinnati Country Day saw the program could be a success, and Mrs. Yeiser turned it over to them -

along with a long waiting list.

The program has thrived.

Mrs. Yeiser earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Sarah Lawrence College and served on the boards of Camp Stepping Stones, Planned Parenthood and the Memorial Society.

She also leaves four children, Charles F. Yeiser Jr. of Worcester, Vt., Henry C. Yeiser of Anderson Township, Margaret Y. Hawkins of Indian Hill, and Ellen Yeiser of Littleton, Colo.; and four grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday at Indian Hill Church.

Memorials: Camp Stepping Stones, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Planned Parenthood of Southwestern Ohio.

Merrie Wedding, "loved the world'

Golfers at the Little Miami Center came to know the cheerful spirit of Merrie Wedding. Co-workers at the Reuben H. Donnelly Co. came to know her professionalism and determination.

And just days before Mrs. Wedding, 62, died of throat cancer on Nov. 5, her courage and humor shined through as she portrayed "Big Bird" to the delight of others at a Halloween party.

"Merrie loved people and loved the world," said her husband, William, of Cherry Grove. "She felt there was nothing she could not accomplish."

Mrs. Wedding worked at the pro shop at Little Miami Center, arising at 4 a.m. every day, until illness pulled her away. In the 1960s, she became the first female ad salesperson for Donnelly's Yellow Pages.

Only five days before her death at Hospice of Cincinnati, she donned the Big Bird costume at Row House Art Gallery in Milford, where she was executive art consultant.

"She saw beauty in everyone and everything," said her husband.

She also leaves daughters Kathryn O'Connor of Mason and Deborah Buxton of Kettering; sons Ronald Buxton of Lebanon and Donald Buxton of Royal Oak, Md.; stepdaughter June Hayes of Glen Este; stepsons Scott Wedding of Pleasant Ridge and Marc Wedding of Las Vegas; sisters Martha Lotito and Helen Helm of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Elizabeth Meyer of Loveland; brother William Helm of Anaconda, Mt.; and 10 grandchildren.
