Martin Essex, former state superintendent
Martin W. Essex, former state superintendent of public instruction, died in Columbus Thursday. He was 89.
Mr. Essex held the state post for 10 years before retiring in 1977. He also was president of both the American Association of School Administrators and the Council of State Superintendents.
"He bridged the gap between local and state schools at a very high level," said William Bainbridge, who served as administrative assistant to Mr. Essex from 1969 to 1974. "I believe that Martin Essex was 20 to 30 years ahead of his time in his understanding of the problems of American schools and his understanding of some policy type solutions."
Mr. Essex helped bring about changes in occupational education, education for the disabled, career counseling and teacher education.
He also was a driving force in establishing vocational education in Ohio and campaigning
for an elected state board of education, said Robert Bowers, assistant superintendent of public instruction from 1970-76.
He leaves his wife, Blanche. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Ruth Harrison Sullivan, poet, teacher
Ruth Harrison Sullivan, a poet and descendant of former U.S. President William Henry Harrison, died Sunday at age 85.
Christmas poems were regular gifts from Mrs. Sullivan, also a retired elementary school teacher who lived in Williamstown, Ky.
"She wrote us a Christmas poem every year. She was a special person," said Mrs. Sullivan's nephew, Terry Gillespie of Dry Ridge.
Mrs. Sullivan graduated from high school at age 16, and was also a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, her nephew said. She taught in one-room schools at Jonesville and Stewardsville in Grant County. She also taught at the Heekin School, which was on her own great-grandfather's farm in Grant County.
Mrs. Sullivan also was a descendant of Grant County pioneers, said Gillespie. She was born in a house that dated to an ancestor's 1840 land grant.
Other survivors are two nieces.

Sister Miriam Regina, taught home economics
Sister Miriam Regina Powell, a Sister of Charity who taught home economics for 40 years, died Friday at Mother Margaret Hall nursing home in Delhi Township. She was 92.
Sister Miriam Regina received a bachelor's degree in home economics from the College of Mount St. Joseph in 1925 and held the distinction of being the oldest living graduate of the college.
She and her sister, Sister Miriam Teresa Powell, who died in 1990, were the first twins to become Sisters of Charity. They entered the order in 1929.
Sister Miriam Regina be gan teaching at Mount St. Joseph Academy, Cincinnati, from 1929 to 1938, and was director of home economics at the College of Mount St. Joseph from 1938 to 1956. She also earned a master's degree in nutrition from Columbia University.
After teaching in Denver, Cleveland and South Holland, Ill., she returned to Cincinnati in 1975 to work as an information clerk at Good Samaritan Hospital. She retired in 1980.
Mass: 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sisters of Charity motherhouse chapel, Delhi Township. Visitation: noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Sisters of Charity Heritage Room.

Robert Robinson, former detective
Robert Earl Robinson, 72, who had been a detective sergeant with the Springdale Police Department, died Saturday.
Mr. Robinson, of Dry Ridge, Ky., was a member of Eastern Hamilton County Fraternal Order of Police No. 74. He also was a member of the Lockland Church of the Nazarene.
Services will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown, Ky., and 11 a.m. Saturday at Lockland Church of the Nazarene.
