Laser pioneer Dr. Leon Goldman
Dr. Leon Goldman is best known for his pioneering work as the first physician to use laser technology. But his relatives and friends also remember him as an artist and poet who was as devoted to his family as he was to his work.
"He stayed interested in everything," said his son, Steven Goldman.
Dr. Goldman, 91, died Tuesday at his home in San Diego.
For most of his career, Dr. Goldman con ducted research at Cincinnati hospitals.
He was the chairman of the University of Cincinnati's dermatology department for 31 years and was the former director of the Laser Treatment Center at Jewish Hospital.
He is recognized as the first physician in the country to use lasers in medical procedures, a breakthrough that revolutionized surgery.
Dr. Goldman became involved in laser research in 1961, when he was commissioned by the U.S. Public Health Service to test the safety of industrial lasers on employees at the General Electric Co.
Soon after, with grants from the National Institutes of Health, he began to experiment with using laser beams in medicine.
He also became interested in the laser as art. In 1969, he helped produce a laser art exhibit at the Cincinnati Art Museum. His laser photographs have been exhibited in Balboa Park in San Diego.
Steven Goldman said his father continued to experiment with laser art during his retirement. He also wrote a book of children's poetry.
"His tour-de-force was his ability to stay interested and keep fiddling around," his son said. "He'd keep his mind active."
He said his father's medical research continued long after his retirement with regular trips to the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego. "He did it right up to the day he died," he said.
Dr. Goldman also leaves his wife, Belle H. Goldman; son John Goldman, of Atlanta; daughter Carol Schechter, of San Diego; brothers Fred Goldman and Bernard Goldman, both of Cincinnati; sister, Dorothy Flax, of Cincinnati; and five grandchildren.

Richard Lukens' stories captured life in Hillsboro
Short-story writer Richard Lukens spent his retirement writing childhood stories that were published in Ohio Magazine and later recognized by the prestigious Writers Guild Association.
Mr. Lukens later sold his stories about growing up on a farm in Hillsboro, Ohio. Those stories will be published in an upcoming book, called "Keeper of the Menagerie."
The 74-year-old Crestview Hills resident died of lung cancer at Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
A daughter, Tracey Burk, said her father also was a dedicated family man.
"He loved his family, he loved the holidays, he loved to see people having fun and laughing," she said.
He grew up with six brothers and sisters in Hillsboro during the Great Depression. The family lived day-to-day on the chickens and vegetables that his father, William, was paid in exchange for his veterinary services.
Mr. Lukens attended Ohio State University and played football before entering the Army as a medic during World War II.
He worked for 20 years at Adams Wholesalers, which sold lumber.
"That was really the best profession for him, because he liked people; he could talk and he could tell jokes," Mrs. Burk said. "He'd go to lumber companies, take them to lunch and when he walked out, he had made these huge sales."
Heart disease forced Mr. Lukens to retire about 15 years ago. He underwent two bypass surgeries, yet remained upbeat and optimistic. During retirement, he rejuvenated his childhood stories and turned to writing.
Mr. Lukens also leaves two other daughters, Suzanne Pompilio of Cincinnati, and Christine Kennedy of Edgewood; sister, Jane Bowman of Venice, Fla.; brothers, William Lukens of Hillsboro, Jack Lukens of Highland Heights and Theodore Lukens of Cincinnati; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
