Nolan Carson, respected lawyer
Nolan W. Carson, prominent lawyer and one-time state representative, was dedicated to his community and family.
"Nolan loved his family and cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren. He was the finest lawyer I ever knew," said friend and legal colleague Powell McHenry.
"He had keen insight into human nature and was extremely intelligent."
Mr. Carson, 73, died Sunday at his Anderson Township home.
He represented numerous corporate clients, including the Procter & Gamble Co., and served on the board of directors of Fifth-Third Bancorp and the Fifth Third Bank.
Mr. Carson served with the Army in the Pacific during World War II. He graduated from Heidelberg College in 1949, received his law degree in 1951 from the University of Michigan then joined Cincinnati's Dinsmore and Shohl law firm.
From 1961-62, Mr. Carson, a Republican, served in the Ohio House of Representatives. He served as the first chairman of the Ohio Elections Commission in 1974 and was a member of the Hamilton County Park Board from 1978 through 1995, including several terms as president.
He was president of the Natural History Museum and served as trustee of the Cincinnati Southern Railway. He was a member of the Ohio Constitutional Revision Commission, the Commercial Club, the Commonwealth Club, the Queen City Club, the Recess Club, the Queen City Optimists' Club and Cold Stream County Club.
He was president general of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution from 1987-88.
Mr. Carson leaves his wife, Nancy; son, Nolan Carson Jr.; daughter, Julie Brooks; and four grandchildren.

Sister Maria John, taught for 45 years
Sister Maria John Trudell, 88, a teacher for 45 years, died Friday.
She taught at the former St. Patrick School, St. Mary and Seton high schools and at St. Joseph Infant Home, all in Greater Cincinnati; and at schools in Springfield, Marion and Dayton, Ohio; and in Colorado, Michigan and New Mexico. She was a Sister of Charity for 70 years.
Mass was today at the Sisters of Charity motherhouse in Delhi Township.

Sister Mary Virginia, educator and leader
Sister Mary Virginia Sullivan, president of Our Lady of Cincinnati College in the 1960s, died Monday at Franciscan Hospital in Mt. Airy. She was 91.
Sister Mary Virginia, of the Religious Sisters of Mercy, was identified with Our Lady of Cincinnati - which became Edgecliff College - for 32 years. She was the college's first academic dean and its president from 1960 to 1967.
In 1967, Sister Mary Virginia was appointed provincial director of higher education for the Sisters of Mercy. She was a member of the order for 69 years.
Xavier University President Rev. James E. Hoff, S.J., extended his "deepest condolences to members of the Sullivan family, the Sisters of Mercy and all those affiliated with Our Lady of Cincinnati/Edgecliff College."
"Her legacy lives on in the thousands of alumnae whose lives she touched and who daily make valuable contributions to the family, civic and religious life of Cincinnati and the world," Father Hoff said.
Xavier annually bestows the Sister Mary Virginia Sullivan Award to an alumna of Our Lady of Cincinnati/Edgecliff College who exemplifies the life of service that marked her tenure at the institution.
The 1997 recipient of the award, Theresa Bruemmer, class of 1959 and director of Pregnancy Problem Center East, said of Sister Mary Virginia, "I just loved her. She was a treasure and a big part of my life. I am sure she is now just rejoicing in heaven."
The London, Ohio, native entered the order after graduation from the College of Saint Mary of the Springs ( Ohio Dominican College) in Columbus and received her master of arts degree from Marquette University.
In 1964, Xavier University awarded her an honorary doctor of laws degree and in 1974 Edgecliff College - which later joined Xavier - conferred an honorary doctor of laws degree on her.
She was a member of numerous professional and civic organizations, including the Cincinnati Chapter of the American Red Cross.
She leaves cousins, Jo Ann Sullivan Murtagh of Toledo and Ursuline Sister Jeanne Marie Casey of New Rochelle, N.Y.
