Joseph Perrino, built good life for family
Joseph Perrino never had formal schooling. Yet there were few things the Covedale man couldn't fix.
"He was very handy and creative," said his son, Mario Perrino of Cincinnati. "He often made his own handmade tools to do things. He would sit and study things and figure out how to fix them - often with tools he had made himself."
Mr. Perrino, 87, died Tuesday.
Mr. Perrino emigrated to the U.S. from Gallo Matese, Italy, in 1926 when he was 15 years old. He came with his mother, brother and three small sisters. They joined their father, who had come to this country.
Mr. Perrino worked as a pipelayer for the Cincinnati Water Works for 44 years before he retired in April 1976. He continued to work around the home he shared with Rosa, his wife of 67 years, and the homes of his children.
"He was an avid gardener who worked in his yard until he was 85 years old," said his son.
Mr. Perrino also leaves daughters, Mary Augustine, Minnie Bohan and Rosemary Perrino, all of Cincinnati; brother, Louis Perrino of Cincinnati; sisters, Minnie Cupito, Jeanette McKnight and Mary Roberto, all of Cincinnati; 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Harry Gough, retired newspaper ad salesman
Harry Gough was such a good salesman, it took him just four dates to convince Dorothy to spend their lives together.
Gough, 81, died Saturday of congestive heart failure, six years after a stroke.
He worked for The Cincinnati Post selling advertising beginning in 1935 before serving as a corporal in the Army Signal Corps from 1943-1946. After that, he returned to Cincinnati, where his parents' Westwood home was across the street from the home owned by the parents of Dorothy Schulze.
"I met him up at the trolley stop because no one had cars then," recalled Dorothy Schulze Gough.
"He was beautifully dressed. Two nights later, he called to tell me he had to deliver some advertising and asked if I would go along with him."
She did. That led to a sec ond date, then another and then another - at a Cincinnati Reds baseball game.
"On my fourth date he took me to Opening Day. He proposed to me that night. I accepted because he was different from most men. He was very strong," she said.
Shortly after their wedding, the newlyweds moved to Evanston, Ill., where he worked in the Scripps national sales office. He stayed with that company for 22 more years, becoming advertising director for the Cleveland Press before retiring in 1983.
The couple returned to Westwood in 1984.
"I had a great love affair with this wonderful man," Mrs. Gough said. "I had a great life. It was a great ride."
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Barbara Brady and Linda Irons.
A memorial service was held today at the Westwood United Methodist Church.
