Thelma Womack, downtown restaurateur

Retired restaurateur Thelma Womack, 94, who operated three popular Cincinnati restaurants, died Dec. 9 in Tennessee.

Mrs. Womack began in her teens as a clerk in an East End grocery store.

When she and her late husband, Owen, opened Womack's on Eighth Street in 1948, it became a favorite place for newspaper and broadcast journal ists. A decade later, the couple relocated the restaurant on Main Street near the Hamilton County Courthouse. It drew judges, attorneys and office workers.

After her husband's death in 1963, Ms. Womack and her son, Steve, continued the business but closed it in 1965.

Struggle for rights, peace filled Ernest Bromley's life

The Rev. Ernest Bromley, peacemaker, war resister and one of the original Freedom Riders, died Wednesday in a Boston hospital after a long battle with cancer. He was 85.

His longtime friend and colleague, Gordon Maham, of Cincinnati, was with him at his death.

He had spent the last two months in hospitals, fighting cancer, Mahan said. He lived a good life.

Rev. Bromley protested against wars and taxes and for civil and human rights all his life.

In April, 1947, Rev. Bromley, then a North Carolina Methodist minister, was one of 16 original Freedom Riders who traveled on Greyhound and Trailways buses through the South protesting against segregation and testing new integration laws.

In 1948, Rev. Bromley and his wife, Marion, moved to the Cincinnati area and began working with anti-war activist Rev. Maurice McCrackin, whom Rev. Bromley admired. The couple ultimately moved to a farm in Gano, Ohio, where they established Gano Peacemakers, Inc.

The farm became the focus of a major protest when the Internal Revenue Service seized it after Rev. Bromley refused to pay taxes. Rev. Bromley was jailed but charges were later dismissed.

Rev. Bromley was with Rev. McCrackin when both went to jail in 1963 for picketing in front of the home of the mayor of Selma, Ala. Charges were later dismissed. Rev. Bromley also organized rallies in Cincinnati protesting segregation and objecting to Vietnam War.

I met him in 1970 when I got out of the military, at Washington Park at an anti-war rally, and he became an inspiration to me, said longtime friend Sonny Williams, a volunteer with the Cincinnati Welfare Rights Coalition.

My first arrest came from an invitation from Ernest Bromley. He invited me to go to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base around 1972 to protest the dedication of a building to (former President Richard) Nixon . . .

He was just my inspiration.

Maham also remembers joining Rev. Bromley in anti-nuclear protests - and joining him in being arrested.

I was with him when he was arrested at Fernald; I planted a flower, and got arrested myself, Maham said. George Bush had just said we want a kinder and gentler nation.

Newspaper files show Rev. Bromley at any number of peace rallies, sometimes being carried to police cars for transportation to jail, or waving from a cell.

Rev. Bromley was born in Maine and met his wife during World War II in New York, where she was secretary of the pacifist Fellowship of the Reconciliation.

Mrs. Bromley, who died in 1994, was also active in civil rights demonstrations and was arrested for participating in the integration of old Coney Island in the 1950s.

Rev. Bromley leaves a son, Daniel Bromley, and two sisters, of Boston. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
