Elmer Hentz, engineer, veteran

Elmer G. Hentz was born with the 20th century and served in its two World Wars.

Mr. Hentz, of Price Hill, died Monday at Hillebrand Nursing Home. He was 97.

As a very young man, Mr. Hentz served in the Army in World War I. He later graduated from the University of Cincinnati and became an engineer. He was a life member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

In World War II, Mr. Hentz was commissioned an officer in the Navy and served as a commander. He was a life member of the retired officers association, and a retired employee of the Dover Elevator Co.

He is survived by sons Richard, William, Jerome and Thomas Hentz; a daughter, Mary Ann Krommer; 15 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.

Mass: 11 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Church, 814 Hawthorne Ave. Visitation: 9:30 a.m. Saturday until time of service at the church. Arrangements: Harry Meyer & Geiser Funeral Home. Memorials: Holy Family Restore Our Home Fund, 814 Hawthorne Ave., 45205.

ROBERT DANIEL DUBOSE SR., 73, of Avondale, died Wednesday. He was a construction worker. Services: 7 p.m. Monday at New Unity Baptist Church, 2124 Burnet Ave. Visitation: 5 p.m. Monday at the church. Thompson, Hall-Jordan Funeral Home, Walnut Hills, is handling arrangements.

MELVIN O. ENGLISH, 59, of Mt. Healthy, died Tuesday. He was a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service. Services: 6 p.m. Sunday at Shiloh Seventh Day Adventist Church, 3660 Washington Ave. Visitation: 4 p.m. Sunday at the church. Thompson, Hall-Jordan Funeral Home, Walnut Hills, is handling arrangements.

DELORES MIXON WEAVER, 76, of Mt. Auburn, died Tuesday. Ms. Weaver was a retired seamstress and power machine operator for the Easy Way Products. Services: noon Saturday at Renfro Funeral Home, 647 Forest Ave., Avondale. Visitation: 11 a.m. Saturday until time of service at the funeral home.

Sister Marie Berenice, teacher

Sister of Charity Marie Berenice Heidt taught in elementary schools for 51 years and was a Sister of Charity for 69 years.

Sister Marie Berenice died Wednesday at Good Samaritan Hospital at the age of 86.

A Cincinnati native, the nun began her long career in education in 1930 as a teacher at an elementary school in Memphis, Tenn., and then taught primary grades for 12 years in several cities in Ohio including Kenton, Xenia and Chillicothe.

Sister Marie Berenice moved to the intermediate grades from 1942-1950 at Corpus Christi School in Dayton, Ohio. But most of her teaching career was spent on the junior high level.

She taught at St. Gabriel School in Glendale, St. Patrick, St. Joseph Orphanage and Little Flower all in Cincinnati. From 1969 to 1970, she returned to Corpus Christi in Dayton. She also served in schools in Cleveland, Lima and Findlay.

She concluded her involvement with education in 1983 after serving as a school secretary at St. Gabriel. In recognition of her retirement, "Sister Marie Berenice Day" was proclaimed by the mayor of Norwood, where she grew up.

Sister Marie Berenice then moved to the mother house, where she did volunteer work in medical records for 12 years. She had to resign two years ago because of poor eyesight and moved to the assisted living area of Mother Margaret Hall in 1994.

"Sister Marie Berenice was a lovely person. Her students and their parents all loved her. Even when she became ill she always enjoyed visiting and talking with people," said Sister Mary Gerard Cheng, a Sister of Charity in Cincinnati who taught with Sister Marie Berenice at St. Gabriel.

Mass of Christian burial: 11 a.m. today in the Heritage Room of the Sisters of Charity motherhouse, Delhi Township. Visitation: 9 a.m. until time of Mass.

Brother Charles W. Hoctor, of Jesuit Order

Catholic Brother Charles W. Hocter, 77, of the Chicago Province of the Jesuit Order, died Thursday in Pontiac, Mich.

The Cincinnati native lived his life of service to Jesuits by managing kitchens at Jesuit residences and retreat houses in the Midwest.

A graduate of Holy Family School and Elder High School, he entered the Jesuit novitiate in Milford in 1939.

Brother Hocter leaves a sister, Catherine Redmond; and a brother, James Hocter, both of Cincinnati. Services will be held in Clarkston, Mich.

Herman Clifton, played with Tigers

Former professional baseball player and businessman Herman "Flea" Clifton, 89, of Western Hills, died Monday.

He was a retired vice president of George R. Hammerlein Insurance Agency and played on the Detroit Tigers' World Series championship teams of 1934 and 1935. He also was a scout for the Cincinnati Reds and coached several championship knothole baseball teams.

Mr. Clifton leaves his wife of 66 years, Marcella; daughters Arlene Nixon of Harrison, Carol Couch of Hamilton, Ohio, and Gwenn Smith of Delhi Township; a son, Kerry Clifton of Miami Heights; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Neidhard-Minges Funeral Home, Westwood. Visitation: 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials: charity of donor's choice.

Bromley services Jan. 24

A memorial service for the Rev. Ernest Bromley will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Community Friends Meeting, 3960 Winding Way, Avondale.

Rev. Bromley, 85, died Dec. 17 in a Boston Hospital after a long battle with cancer. He was a well-known community activist who protested U.S. military actions and fought for civil rights.

He was one of the original Freedom Riders who protested segregation.

Rev. Edward Conlon, parish priest

The Rev. Edward F. Conlon was ordained to the priesthood May 26, 1956, by then Cincinnati Archbishop Karl J. Alter and served in several southwestern Ohio posts.

"Those who knew him said that although he was not necessarily an eloquent preacher he was very effective because he was so genuine; in fact, the word most often used to describe him was "saintly,"' said the Rev. Christopher R. Armstrong, archdiocese chancellor.

Father Conlon died Friday at the age of 77. He was serving in the Crochu Roman Catholic Church, St. Andrew, Grenada, West Indies.

His nephew, the Rev. Dan Conlon, former chancellor of the archdiocese and currently pastor of Holy Redeemer Church in New Bremen, Ohio, credits his uncle with inspiring his own vocation to the priesthood, Father Armstrong said.

Father Conlon studied at Xavier University, St. Gregory and Mt. St. Mary seminaries in Cincinnati before his ordination.

He was appointed associate paster of St. Mary Parish in Urbana, Ohio, in June 1956.

In 1962, he was assigned to assist at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral in Cincinnati and began teaching at the former DePorres High School. He also became assistant director of the Catholic Youth Organization in June 1964.

In June 1965, Father Conlon was made assistant pastor of St. Raphael Parish in Springfield, Ohio, and in June 1969 he became pastor of Resurrection Parish in Dayton, Ohio.

In February 1982 he was assigned to pastoral service in Grenada, West Indies, and retired in August.

Archbishop Daniel Pilarczyk will celebrate Mass for Father Conlon at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 2 at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral.
