Dr. Eugene Searfoss, osteopath

The Oct. 27 death of Dr. Eugene Searfoss, a Jewish Hospital executive, osteopath and professor, has been ruled accidental by the Hamilton County Coroner's office.

Cincinnati police and the coroner's office say Searfoss, who had been dead several days when found in his Mt. Adams condominium, died of head injuries resulting from a fall.

The Philadelphia native was chief of staff and a member of the board of trustees at Jewish Hospital Kenwood in 1988-89. He was director of emergency services at Epp Memorial Hospital (later Jewish Hospital) in 1982-92 and was chairman of the hospital's Department of Nuclear Medicine in 1982-88.

He was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Searfoss arrived in Ohio when he took a rotating internship at Grandview Hospital in Dayton. He moved to Cincinnati in 1976 for a fellowship in nuclear medicine at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Among his teaching positions, he was assistant clinical professor at Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens.

He leaves his father, Eugene Searfoss Sr., of Mt. Adams; and a brother, Scott Searfoss, of New York City.

ELBERT L. "SIG" HARTMAN, 71, of St. Cloud, Fla., formerly of Brooksburg, Ind., died Sunday. He was a carpenter, a past president of Switzerland County Addle Club and a member of the Brooksburg and Milton volunteer fire departments. Anita Nichols, Mt. Washington publisher

Retired newspaper editor Anita M. Nichols, who chronicled life in Mt. Washington through her "So They Say" column, died Tuesday. She was 84.

With her husband, Arnold, Mrs. Nichols published the Mt. Washington Press until closing it in 1995. She was editor from her husband's death in 1986 until 1995. She also founded the Ohio Piker, a weekly newspaper that was later renamed the Clermont County Review. She was editor of that paper until 1994.

She began writing her weekly column in 1947.

A Mt. Washington native, she was the first woman to receive a master of science degree in psychology from the University of Cincinnati. She was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and the China-Burma-India Veterans Auxiliary.

She also leaves daughters Sandra Gaither of Amelia, Ohio, and Sharon McCarthy of Forest Park; sons, Dennis Nichols of Cincinnati and Kevin Nichols of Mt. Washington .

Visitation: 6 p.m. Saturday at T.P. White & Sons Funeral Home, Mt. Washington . Services: 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Sister Martina Marie Poirier, teacher, principal

Sister Martina Marie Poirier, 88, of Delhi Township, died Tuesday.

The Sister of Charity was a former principal with Annunciation and St. Gabriel schools, and St. Joseph Orphanage, and a teacher at Holy Trinity and St. Jude schools.

She also was administrator of the Santa Maria Institute.

Mass: 10 a.m. Saturday at Sisters of Charity Motherhouse, Delhi Township. Visitation: 9 a.m. at the motherhouse chapel.

Glenn Leon Heigerick, osteopath

Glenn Leon Heigerick, an osteopath who helped found the Otto C. Epp Memorial Hospital in Kenwood in 1960, died Tuesday. He was 78.

The Hyde Park resident and Chicago native attended the Chicago Osteopathic Medical Center from 1940 to 1944. He moved to Cincinnati after World War II.

"He and some other D.O.'s went together and put the money up (for the hospital). A man named Otto Epp backed them," said his wife, Wanda Heigerick.

The small osteopathic hospital on Galbraith Road in Kenwood later became part of the Jewish Hospital.

Mr. Heigerick was chief of staff at Epp Memorial from 1960 to 1962. He had a private practice in Norwood from 1948 to 1994.

His father was a doctor, and his son, Craig Heigerick, also practices medicine.

Other survivors include a daughter, Holly Heigerick Alder; stepchildren, Rebecca Bolce and Beau Bolce; and four grandchildren.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Elden A. Good Funeral Home, Hyde Park. Visitation: 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials: charity of donor's choice or Hope for Kids.
