Irene P. Brown, minister and mother

Irene P. Brown was known as "Mother Brown" not only to her children and grandchildren, but to dozens of hungry and homeless people who benefitted from her charity.

"Mother Brown opened her kitchen to all - hot buttered rolls, pies and cakes, and that fried chicken, rice and gravy and biscuits," recalled Mrs. Brown's grandson, Lionel Brown.

"She was hard-working, virtuous, kind and had love for all mankind. She met no strangers."

Mrs. Brown, 89, of Springdale, was buried Wednesday after dying Christmas Day.

Besides rearing two sons, a daughter and a grandson, Mrs. Brown adopted many children as her god-children and served as a spiritual leader to numerous adults and children.

"She reared me, brought me up from a baby, and instilled in me a love for education," said Brown, director of student discipline and attendance for Cincinnati Public Schools.

"She helped all children understand how important education is and how important it was to achieve success. She instilled in them a love for the Lord, self-discipline, self-respect, honesty, forthrightness, work ethic and to strive for excellence in all endeavors - perfection.

"She ministered to our minds and hearts, fed us when we needed it, and nourished our souls with God's word."

Mrs. Brown was an ordained minister in the Fire Baptized Holiness Church of God and every June 5 celebrated a special "spiritual birthday" to mark "the day the Lord saved me from sin" - June 5, 1928.

"Mother Brown believed in prayer, the power of prayer and had unyielding faith in God's power," said Lionel Brown. "More importantly, she lived what she preached - a pure and holy life. Mother Brown was love and humility."

Lionel Brown said his grandmother's last words were, "I love you. Meet me in heaven to walk those golden streets, to suffer pain no more. Joy."

Lloyd 'Torch' Hathaway, restaurateur
For nearly 40 years, celebrities like Pete Rose have rubbed shoulders with ordinary folk at Hathaway's Restaurant and Soda Fountain at the Carew Tower.

Lloyd H. "Torch" Hathaway, an ex-marine with a smile and handshake for everyone who came through the doors, opened the coffee shop and restaurant in 1956.

He died Monday.

"Generations have gone to the same coffee shop," said a daughter, Laurie H. Monahan of Gettysburg, Pa. "Those who first came there as children later brought their own children there."

Mr. Hathaway operated the restaurant until two years ago, when he sold it to a Tennessee restaurant owner who kept the business name. Long lines, especially at noon, have never been uncommon at the restaurant, and many celebrities visiting Cincinnati over the years found time to at least have breakfast there, said Mrs. Monahan.

Her father opened the restaurant when she was 4 years old. "All the Reds players ate there. I had the best collection of signed baseball cards on the school bus."

Mr. Hathaway was called "Torchy" because of his red hair and flamboyant personality. "They never called him Lloyd," said Mrs. Monahan.

The World War II veteran served with the Marine Corps in the South Pacific and retired as a major after 22 years. He moved to Cincinnati, where he opened one of the world's first fast-food restaurants, which he called the "Minute Chef."

His other passion was the outdoors. "He was a big hunter and fisherman," his daughter said.

He was a member of the Cincinnati Club, the Army Navy Club, the Terrace Park Country Club, Ducks Unlimited and the Retired Officers Associations.

Mr. Hathaway also leaves his wife, Vera Jordan; daughter, Kim H. Herrlinger of Newport, Rhode Island; brothers, Carl of Boca Ratton, Fla., Ervine of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Roger of Winthrop, Mass.; sister, Ruth L. Keith of Satellite Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 9 a.m. Jan. 9 at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C. Arrangements: Monahan Funeral Home, Gettysburg. Memorials: Lombardi Cancer Center, 3970 Reservoir Road, N.W., Suite E501, Washington, D.C., 20007.
