Ray Feldhaus, prominent in sports
Retired businessman Raymond F. Feldhaus, who operated amateur softball and football leagues for decades, died Tuesday. He was 77.
The former second-generation owner of Feldhaus Sporting Goods, began operating the Feldhaus Leagues shortly after World War II. The leagues became synonymous with amateur sports here for more than 30 years. At their peak in 1975, 350 teams played in the leagues.
The Feldhaus leagues were believed to be the largest privately operated leagues in the country. They began declining in 1978, when Rumpke began managing its softball complex and the city of Cincinnati began reclaiming its fields. The leagues were discontinued in 1982.
The sporting goods store in Carthage started by his late father, Frank Feldhaus, has since been sold and is now Kattus Pro Team Sporting Goods.
Mr. Feldhaus, of Westwood, was a World War II Navy veteran and graduate of Elder High School. He was a longtime member of the Southwestern Ohio High School Football Coaches Association, which honored him in 1993. He held one of the few lifetime memberships of the Queen City Umpires and was a member of the Hudepohl Softball Hall of Fame Committee.
