Jack Strader, radio announcer
Under the name of Jack Strader, John Jacob Strader IV began his career as a student actor at WLW Radio about 1940 and became a well-known radio announcer.
He went on to work at WKRC, WCPO and WCKY before founding Cincinnati's first privately owned FM station, WVAW.
Mr. Strader, a member of a prominent Cincinnati family, died Friday in his Clifton home on property that has been in the Strader family since 1830. He was 74.
He was the great-grandson of Cincinnati steamboat magnate Jacob Strader, who ran the Strader Steamboat Co. and founded the Commercial Bank, predecessor of Central Trust Bank and later PNC Bank. Jacob Strader also was president of the Little Miami Railroad.
John Jacob Strader IV also was a descendant of the family of John and Benjamin Piatt, who donated Piatt Park to the city, and Benjamin Bayless Whiteman, one of the founding developers of Clifton.
The Cincinnati Public Landing, formerly known as Strader's Wharf, was a gift to the people of Cincinnati from Mr. Strader's father, John Jacob Strader III.
With his wife of 53 years, Joan Ganne Strader, Mr. Strader was a generous benefactor of the University of Cincinnati's College Conservatory of Music, the Cincinnati Historical Society's Broadcast Archives and muse um collection, the Emery Theater, the American Theater organ Society and Good Samaritan Hospital, which was founded by one of his ancestors.
Other survivors include a daughter, Jacqueline Strader of Hogansville, Ga.; two grandsons; and a great-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 24 at the Calvary Episcopal Church on Clifton Avenue in Clifton.
Memorials may be made to the College Conservatory of Music organ program or electronic media program, the Cincinnati Museum Center's Broadcast Archives or Good Samaritan Hospital. The Schaefer and Busby Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Ronald J. Speed, coached youth
Ronald J. Speed of Mt. Lookout enjoyed his family and coaching youth in sports.
He was "my best coach ever," said his son, Sean, 11, whom Mr. Speed coached in many sports, including baseball at Cardinal Pacelli.
Mr. Speed, an engineering manager at Cincinnati Milacron, died Jan. 15. He was 42.
Family members say he took great pleasure in small, everyday things, such as the outdoors. He'd always be the one to get up early and cook breakfast, they say.
"Family was always his first priority," said his brother, Mike.
Sue McGrath, his sister-in-law, said, "He was unpretentious and never put on airs. He had literally hundreds of friends, but when speaking with you one-on-one he made you feel so special. He was a fabulous listener."
Mr. Speed graduated from Moeller High School in 1973, earned an undergraduate degree from Ohio State in 1978 and earned an MBA from Xavier in 1985.
As a youth he caddied at Kenwood Country Club and won the Evans Scholarship to Ohio State, which is awarded to caddies. He lettered in baseball and football at Moeller.
As an adult, he enjoyed baseball, softball, tennis and golf, and served on the Ault Park Advisory Committee.
"He took nothing for granted," said his wife, Ann.
Other survivors include a son, Kevin, 7; a daughter, Patricia, 5; and parents, Mary and Melvin Speed of Cincinnati.

Mike Brindley, farmer
Mike Brindley, 44, of Vevay, Ind., died Friday of cancer.
The 1972 graduate of Switzerland High School was a dairy, grain and tobacco farmer all his life and enjoyed the outdoors.
Mr. Brindley leaves his wife, Pam; son Jeffrey of Madison, Ind.; daughters Mary Jennifer and Allison, both at home; a sister, Sherry Jester of Vevay; his parents, Charles and Lee Brindley of Moorefield, Ind.; and two grandchildren.

Gerald Schilling, computer technician
Gerald Frank Schilling is remembered by his family and friends as a friendly man who enjoyed helping others, no matter what the task.
Mr. Schilling, 58, of Springfield Township, died Friday.
He was a former computer technician for The Cincinnati Post and Cincinnati Enquirer.
He was willing to help others, whether he knew the person or not, in any given situation, his family and friends said.
He leaves his wife, Carolyn Schilling; daughters, Deborah Ann Luse of Milan, Ind., and Cheryl Busch of Greendale, Ind.; a sister, Ruth Martin of California; and five grandchildren.
