After reaching the rank of sergeant with the U.S. Marines, Mr. Davis returned home from the war and signed up to play pro ball. In 1950, Mr. Davis returned to Cincinnati and joined the police division, where he became the first African American assigned to homicide. He retired in 1979 and opened a neighborhood bar, Ken's Tavern.
