Career, hobbies enriched Charles M. Williams' life
Charles M. Williams, former chairman and president of Western & Southern Life Insurance Co., died Thursday. He was 85.
Mr. Williams, son of Western & Southern founder Charles F. Williams, remained on the company's board of directors after stepping down as chairman in 1973. He was to be honored Monday for 66 years of service to Western & Southern and planned to retire after Tuesday's board meeting.
Mr. Williams had a wide range of interests, including breeding and exhibiting thoroughbred saddle horses and raising champion Dalmatians at his Erlanger, Ky., farm, called Williamsdale Kennels. Among his champion horses were Foolish Fellow, Dennis King and The Twin.
He was a habitual collector and, at one time, he had the finest coin and gun collections in the nation, said his son, Charles F. Williams.
But his lifelong hobby was collecting autographs. Beginning at age 6, he collected the signatures of every president, their families and cabinet members and candidate for president in the nation's history. He was working on the collection a week before his death, said a daughter, Estella W. Hassan.
Mr. Williams was a self-taught amateur radio operator and was a president of the Gray Museum of Wireless History. He was the communications officer of the U.S. Power Squadron in Cincinnati and, during the Vietnam War, would unite families with their loved ones serving in Southeast Asia via radio.
"My father was the combination of the sharpest wit and finest sense of humor that I've ever known," said Charles F. Williams. 'There were just so many things he was involved in and he understood so many things. When I think of him, I think of his sense of humor and keen mind."
Mr. Willimas was a private man who avoided publicity, yet
his sense of humor and engaging personality attracted many friends.
He married the former Elizabeth Hilberg Seifried in September 1940.
Mr. Williams began his career as a salesman for Western & Southern in 1931 after graduating from Georgetown University. He was named president in 1951 and chairman of the board in 1957.
Outside the company, Mr. Williams was the past president of the Cincinnati Charity Horse Show, which raised money to benefit Children's Hospital. He was also the state representative of the Ohio Horse Breeders Association, a trustee of the Cincinnati Historical Society for 40 years and a trustee of the Cincinnati Foundation.
Other survivors are another daughter, Elizabeth W. Lende; five grandchildren; a brother William J. Williams; and a sister, Mary Elizabeth Kyte.
