Henry Felson, respected doctor
Dr. Henry "Chippy" Felson's expertise was so well known that other Cincinnati physicians often sent their families to him when they were sick.
Dr. Felson, 92, an internist long associated with the Jewish Hospital, died March 9.
"He was an outstanding clinician," said longtime friend and associate Dr. Jerome Wiot. "He was of the old school that made the diagnosis based on careful clinical history and careful clinical exam."
In an era lacking CT scanners and other modern equipment, Dr. Felson was best known as an expert in physical examination and the use of the hands to feel a patient's organs through the skin. "He was one of the most careful docs I've ever seen around," Wiot said.
Dr. Felson's extensive private practice was cut short 30 years ago by a heart attack, but he stayed busy with volunteer work and teaching.
Even into his 80s, Dr. Felson enjoyed spending time with medical students and interns at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Wiot said.
"They were getting one of the premier guys."
Dr. Felson served as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He leaves daughters, Lois Mock of Washington, D.C., and Jane Brown of Cincinnati; a sister, Edith Shapiro of Cincinnati; and two grandsons.
