Albert Wolff, last of 'Untouchables'

Albert H. Wolff, the last surviving member of Eliot Ness' Chicago police force known as the "Untouchables," died Saturday. The Mason, Ohio, resident was 95.

Mr. Wolff worked for the Chicago police and the U.S. Department of Justice.

The "Untouchables" - named for their unwillingness to take bribes from mob bosses such as Al Capone - were portrayed in a television show and the Paramount Pictures film "The Untouchables."

Mr. Wolff was a technical consultant during filming of the 1987 film and showed actor Kevin Costner how officers walked and held a gun during that time period.

Mr. Wolff also served in the Treasury Department with the Bureau of Prohibition, Bureau of Narcotics and with the Internal Revenue Service. In 1945, he retired from public service and entered the restaurant business in Chicago.

He leaves sons, Howard, of Northfield, Ill., and Robert, of California; a daughter, Gloria Annenberg of Blue Ash; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements in Skokie, Ill., are incomplete.

James A. Bansbach, banking executive

James A. Bansbach, 79, president of Peoples National Bank in Lawrenceburg, and vice president of First National Bank, Aurora, died Friday.

Mr. Bansbach, of Greendale, Ind., also was a member of the Elks Lodge, the Dearborn County Country Club, the American Bankers Association and St. Lawrence Church in Lawrenceburg.

He leaves his wife, Jeanette; sons, J. Michael Bansbach of Columbia, Mo., and Stephen Bansbach of Floyd Knobs, Ind.; daughter, Judy Martz of Cincinnati; brother, Maurice Bansbach of Shelbyville, Ind.; sisters, Martha Schick and Helen Reiman

scheider, both of Shelbyville; and seven grandchildren.

Arrangements were through Fitch-Denney Funeral Home, Lawrenceburg.

Sister Julia Pflum, of Mount St. Joseph

Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Julia Pflum, 86, a professor of mathematics and physics at the College of Mount St. Joseph, died Friday at Mother Margaret Hall Nursing Home in Delhi Township.

She was a member of the order for 64 years and an educator for 53 years.

In 1984, she was named professor emerita and three years ago received the Faculty Appreciation Award from the Mount's Alumni Association.

"Sister Julia, in her quiet, unassuming way, served the students and the college community lovingly and efficiently for more than 40 years," said Sister Jean Patrice Harrington, former president of the college.

Following 10 years as a secondary teacher at Mount St. Joseph Academy in Cincinnati, Catholic Central High School in Springfield, Ohio, and St. James High School in Bay City, Mich., Sister Julia began teaching math and physics at Mount St. Joseph in 1943.

Sister Julia held a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the Mount and a master's degree in mathematics from the Catholic University of America.

She leaves many nieces and nephews.

Mass was today at the Sisters of Charity Motherhouse Chapel, Delhi Township.

Ralph O. Bergman, insurance executive

Ralph O. Bergman, a sportsman and retired founder of the Ralph O. Bergman Insurance Agency, died Monday at his Madeira home. He was 97.

Mr. Bergman began with the Lazarus Co., selling millinery items on the East Coast. In 1924, he signed on with the William Lord Insurance Agency and went on to found his own company in 1940.

Mr. Bergman was a longtime member of the Kenwood Country Club and served as the golf and sports chairman. He also was a member of the Cincinnati Club, the Dairyman's Country Club in Boulder Junction, Wis., and was a renowned gardener.

"Although blind and deaf for several years, he never complained and always tried to encourage others," said his daughter-in-law, Eileen Bergman Tyman. Mr. Bergman often regaled his grandchildren with stories of the family business and what it means to have character, she said.

He also leaves brothers, Richard Bergmann and Peter E. Bergmann; sisters, Lillian Berning, Florence Meyer, Bertha Bielage, Charlotte Carvill and Dolores Schroer; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in deaths by his wife, Helen Hysan Bergman, son James Roger Bergman, and daughter, Elizabeth Bergman Emmert.

Mass: 10 a.m. Friday at St. Gertrude Church, Madeira. Arrangements: Gilligan Funeral Home, Kenwood. Memorials: Little Sisters of the Poor or St. Rita School for the Deaf.
