William Ruehlmann, air combat hero who served with Selective Service
Col. William E. Ruehlmann, a highly decorated World War II Air Force veteran who headed the Plans and Analysis Division of the Selective Service System, died March 25 at Franciscan Hospital-Western Hills Campus. He was 81.
"We have lost not only a beloved member of the family, but also an American hero who served his country with distinction in war and peace," said his younger brother, Cincinnati attorney and former Mayor Eugene P. Ruehlmann.
William Ruehlmann enlisted in the Army Air Corps in June, 1941, earned his commission and pilot's wings and was assigned to the newly formed 92nd Bomb Group. He trained to pilot the B- 24 Liberator heavy bomber and the B-17 Flying Fortress. He became the first to pilot a B-17 non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean.
During the ensuing daylight bombing campaign, the 92nd was effectively "shot out of the war" after seven missions, of which Mr. Ruehlmann flew four. He joined the 94th Bomb Group as a command pilot, flying 53 more missions.
He met his future wife, Margaret Thelma Smith, of the Royal Canadian Army Nursing Corps, after his hospitalization following a crash landing.
Mr. Ruehlmann earned two Presidential Unit Citations, the Army and Air Force Commendation Medals, five Distinguished Flying Crosses, nine Air Medals, the Purple Heart, the French Croix de Guerre (Gold Star), the American Defense Service Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and the American Theater Service Medal. After the war he served in various Air Force capacities, including chief of the Officer Procurement Section for Headquarters, 1st Air Force, then Headquarters, Continental Air Command, both in New York.
He became a member of the staff of Gen. Lewis B. Hershey, director of the Selective Service System, from 1950 until his separation from the service in 1962 with the rank of colonel.
Mr. Ruehlmann returned to the Selective Service System as a civilian to head its plans and analysis division until 1972 and received its Exceptional Service Award.
The Western Hills High School graduate attended the University of Cincinnati.
He also leaves sons, William J., of Norfolk, Va., and John F. Ruehlmann, of Burke, Va.; sisters, Helen J. Rahe, of Nashville, Tenn., Edith M. Betz, of Cincinnati, and Louise H. Mandell, of Crestview Hills, Ky.; other brothers, Carl G. Ruehlmann, of Cincinnati and Elmer H. Ruehlmann, of Sequim, Wash.; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Walter S. Bertaux, GE hall of famer
Walter S. Bertaux was a man of integrity who enjoyed volunteering his time to others since his retirement from General Electric.
Mr. Bertaux, 76, of Montgomery, died March 24.
He joined General Electric's aircraft team in 1948 after graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He worked on a number of engine projects over the years. He retired in 1983 from GE's mass transit and locomotive operations in Erie, Pa. He was inducted into the General Electric Propulsion Hall of Fame in 1986.
The Nova Scotia native served with the U.S. Marines Corps in the South Pacific during World War II and was a member of Church of the Saviour United Methodist in Montgomery, where he sang in the choir.
He leaves his wife of 48 years, Juanita Bertaux; son, Leonard Bertaux of Beverly, Mass.; daughters, Michele Bertaux and Nancy Bertaux of Cincinnati; brother, Edward Bertaux of Cincinnati; sister, Lois Christie of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and eight grandchildren.
Services were private.

Allene Steinmetz-Branch
Allene Steinmetz-Branch, an energetic Loveland woman who worked most of her life but carved out much of her spare time for church activities, died Friday at age 80.
"Nothing seemed to slow her down. She was quite a remarkable woman," said Dr. John Dean, pastor of Church of the Saviour United Methodist in Montgomery.
At the church, she was a member of the Women's Program, a Bible study program, and the Adventurers - a travel group for seniors.

Harold G. Herbstreit, greenskeeper
Golfers appreciated the dedication and care Harold G. Herbstreit gave to Western Hills Coun try Club as superintendent of greens for many years.
The Delhi Township resident died Sunday at age 80.
His 1986 retirement marked the end of a family greenskeeping tradition that spanned 74 years at the country club. Mr. Herbstreit began working for his father in 1939.
It was a job he enjoyed, said his wife, Stella Smith Herbstreit. "He never had time to play. He worked seven days a week."
He loved gardening and caring for his lawn. Friends often consulted him when they had lawn problems.
Mr. Herbstreit was a decorated Army veteran of World War II and was part of the D-Day landing.
He also leaves a stepdaughter, Jane Sellet; sis ters, Loraine Struck and Lenora Perkins; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and a great- great grandchild.
