Mr. Ruehlmann earned two Presidential Unit Citations, the Army and Air Force Commendation Medals, five Distinguished Flying Crosses, nine Air Medals, the Purple Heart, the French Croix de Guerre (Gold Star), the American Defense Service Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and the American Theater Service Medal. After the war he served in various Air Force capacities, including chief of the Officer Procurement Section for Headquarters, 1st Air Force, then Headquarters, Continental Air Command, both in New York.

He became a member of the staff of Gen. Lewis B. Hershey, director of the Selective Service System, from 1950 until his separation from the service in 1962 with the rank of colonel.

Mr. Ruehlmann returned to the Selective Service System as a civilian to head its plans and analysis division until 1972 and received its Exceptional Service Award.
