John Gerbus, built homes
Builder and developer Henry John Gerbus, 94, of Mt. Airy, died at Beechknoll Retirement Community Tuesday.
A certified master carpenter when he came to the United States from Plaggenschale, Germany, in 1925, Mr. Gerbus was known in Cincinnati for building custom homes. He was a builder and developer for many years in the Mt. Airy and College Hill areas.
One of the original members of the Kolping Society, Mr. Gerbus was active in the development and growth of the society in Cincinnati. Also active in Findlay Market, Mr. Gerbus was its president 17 years. He was a lifetime mem ber of the Mt. Airy Civic Club and the Old St. Mary's Church Foundation.
Mr. Gerbus is survived by his wife, Lillian Gerbus; sons Leo, Rudy, and Harry Gerbus, all of Greater Cincinnati; nine grandchildren and 14 great- grandchildren.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Therese Church of the Little Flower, Mt. Airy. Visitation will be 8:30 a.m. Monday at Mihovk-Rosenacker Funeral Home, 5527 Cheviot Road. A Kolping Society Service will be at 9 a.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to Old St. Mary's Church, Over-the-Rhine.

Daniel Pompilio, restaurant founder
Daniel Joseph Pompilio, the last of the founders of Pompilio's Italian restaurant in Newport, died Wednesday of heart failure at age 80.
Mr. Pompilio was a teen-ager when his parents opened Pompilio's with their three sons in 1933.
"My grandmother did most of the cooking. The three boys did the management and the bar. My grandfather was the boss," said Mr. Pompilio's son, Daniel.
The Pompilios ran the restaurant until 1982, when the three sons retired and sold it. The restaurant enjoyed national fame after actors Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman ate there and filmed a scene for the hit film, "Rain Man."
"He (his father) was always able to work with people. Years after they sold the restaurant, employees would keep in touch with him, stopping to visit," Pompilio's son said.
Other survivors are three daughters: Sandra Crawford of Newport, Kathy Eggerding of Cincinnati and Karen Gassmann of Ft. Wright; and seven grandchildren.

Norma Jean Ryder, deputy clerk
Norma Jean Ryder succeeded in motherhood, career and political activities.
Mrs. Ryder, 64, of Ludlow, Ky., died at 3:40 a.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
Mrs. Ryder served as Kenton County deputy circuit clerk. She worked in the driver's license department of the Erlanger office.
"She was always there and was a good worker," said Ed Schroeder, retired circuit clerk.
She was a member of the Kenton County Democratic Women's Club and the Kenton County Democrat Club.
Mrs. Ryder was born in Covington and lived her whole life in Northern Kentucky. Her daughter, Jeanie Berlund, of Cincinnati, said she succeeded as a nurturing mother and grandmother.
"She was just a great mom and a great grandmother. She'll be missed," her daughter said.
All six of her children stayed in the tri-state.
Survivors include her husband, Delmar I. Ryder; sons, Michael Meyer of Taylor Mill and David Meyer of Erlanger; daughters, Jeanie Berlund of Cincinnati, Terrie Meyer of Covington, Joanie Hagedorn and Joyce Meyer, both of Ludlow, and Pam Figart of Blanchester, Ohio; sisters, Mabel Ballinger and Ruth Hilligas, both of Covington; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
