George and Bette Gore, died together
George J. Gore, a University of Cincinnati business professor, had achieved the distinction of being a fellow in the Academy of Management - a distinction shared by only 110 others around the world.
But Mr. Gore had recently learned that he had inoperable cancer.
Wednesday, Mr. Gore, 72, and his wife, Bette Iles Gore, were found shot to death in a cabin at Hueston Woods State Park near Oxford, Ohio. Police are investigating but retrieved a note from the scene that said the deaths were a double suicide.
In 1959, Mr. Gore helped found the management department in the College of Business Administration.
He did management consulting for private businesses.
After service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, the Chicago native earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering in 1949 and a master's degree in management in 1950 from the University of Illinois. He went on to earn a master's in business administration and doctorate from the University of Michigan.
Mr. Gore was scheduled to retire this spring.
"George was well loved by his colleagues," said Fritz Russ, dean of UC's College of Business Administration.
Mrs. Gore was a native of Urbana, Ill., and 1947 Illinois graduate. She wrote department store advertisements.
She belonged to a number of organizations including the Daughters of the American Revolution.
