Gerard Chabot, father and friend

Gerard J. Chabot, father of Cincinnati Congressman Steve Chabot and a veteran of the U.S. military which he served for 29 years, died Friday at Good Samaritan Hospital. He was 78.

"He was my great friend as well as a great dad," Steve Chabot said. "He lived his life to the fullest. He loved his family more than anything in the world."

The senior Chabot had been ill with cancer for the past several years, but his death came suddenly as a result of a brain hemorrhage Thursday, Chabot said.

Chabot, who flew home from Washington Thursday night, said he and the family were with his father when he died early Friday morning.

Chabot, a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, saw active duty in Europe during World War II, where he was head of a Mobile Optical Unit. He met his wife, Doris Tilley, at a USO dance in North Carolina where he was stationed in 1942 at Morris Field Air Force Base. They were married in 1945 and recently celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary.

In 1947, the Chabots came to Cincinnati, where Chabot worked in the optical field for Southern Optical and then managed I.M. Prince Optical.

Later, Chabot worked with his son in his law office for 10 years, from 1984 until 1994, when Steve Chabot was elected to Congress. Asked if he planned to work for his son in Washington, Chabot replied: "No, I've already retired three times. Enough is enough."'

"He was really a great guy," Steve Chabot said of his father. "I remember him going to all my football and baseball games, to Boy Scout events. Now that we're all grown, he spent a lot of time going to the grandkids' events."

Chabot said his father loved the outdoors.

"He loved to fish, and he was a rock hound," Chabot said. "He loved to collect rocks and fossils. He'd go hunting in a creek bed and he was in heaven; he'd spend the whole day collecting rocks and arrowheads and things.

"He was just a great guy."

In addition to his wife and son, Chabot leaves sons, Ron and Dave Chabot; a daughter, Carol Del Prince, all of Cincinnati; a sister, Jeannette Olson; a brother, Robert Chabot, and 10 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Catharine of Siena Church, Westwood. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Neidhard-Minges Funeral Home, 3155 Harrison Ave., Westwood.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the St. Catharine F.R.E.S.H. Fund, c/o St. Catharine's Church.
