Chemist Amanda Glass, marched with Dr. King
Retired chemist and civil rights activist Amanda M. Glass, 82, died Friday.
What began as a summer job at Benet Drug
Corp. in 1935 turned into a career there, with the Avondale resident being involved in the development of several cosmetic and dermatology products.
The Withrow High School graduate also attended Wilberforce University and the University of Cincinnati.
An active lifetime member of the NAACP, she helped form a local group to join the Freedom March on Washington led by the Rev. Martin Luther King.
Ms. Glass also was a member of the Urban League Guild, Hadassah, Avondale Community Council and Paddock Hills Neighborhood Association.
Ms. Glass was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, where she was active in the St. Cecilia's Guild. She was also an adviser of the parish's Young Churchmen and a founder of St. Andrew's Pantry.
She leaves several nephews and nieces.

Memorial service Friday for accident victims
A memorial service for Elizabeth Holtz Perry and Alvanette Ingraham will be 2 p.m. Friday at New Thought Unity Center in Walnut Hills.
The two sisters died of injuries suffered in an auto accident in Westwood on April 22. Mrs. Perry, of Cranberry, N.J., formerly of Westwood, died Wednesday at Good Samaritan Hospital. She had been visiting Mrs. Ingraham, 92, of Westwood, who died April 22.
Mrs. Perry leaves a daughter, Janet Pellichero, and son, William Rodefeld; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Ingraham leaves a daughter, Jane Classen, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the center. Arrangements for Mrs. Perry are by Schaefer & Busby Funeral Home. Arrangements for Mrs. Ingraham are by Vitt, Stermer & Anderson Funeral Home.

John E. Barry, Finneytown,
renowned cost engineer
John E. Barry, a renowned cost engineer and a world traveler, died Wednesday. The Finneytown man was 70.
Mr. Barry started his career with DuPont in cost estimating and project management roles before coming to Cincinnati and working for the Procter & Gamble Co.
While at P&G, he managed cost engineering globally for several product lines. He retired in 1991 after 23 years of service to the company, then founded John E. Barry Inc., an international cost engineering firm. He continued to consult and give seminars throughout North America, Europe and Asia.
Mr. Barry was a former president of the American Association of Cost Engineers, and a member of St. Vivian Church, where he helped found the parish's St. Patrick's Day fundraisers.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Mary "Peg" Barry; daughters, Mary Pat Bodell of Iowa City, Iowa, and Maureen Barry of Manistee, Mich.; and sons, Michael Barry of Indianapolis, Kevin Barry of Pleasant Ridge and Timothy Barry of Finneytown; brothers, James P. Barry of Woodbury, N.J., William Barry of Reno, Nev., and Edward Barry of Richmond, Va.; and five grandchildren.

Robert R. Kettler, popular
Miami University professor
Miami University associate professor and associate chair of English, Robert R. Kettler, died Wednesday morning at McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford. He was 58.
A popular campus figure since joining the English department faculty in 1968, Mr. Kettler later added American Studies courses to his teaching load.
In 1980, he was awarded a Fulbright teaching grant and lectured in Norway for a year.
"Literature, and the writing of his colleagues and students inspired him," said a colleague, Dr. Constance Pierce. "He was able to communicate that, especially to younger people."
Mr. Kettler was born in Shelbyville, Ind., the son of Kenneth and Rae Lucas Nally, and earned his bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees from Purdue University.
In Oxford, he was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 28 F&AM.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Kettler; a son, Robert Bradley of College Corner; a daughter, Alison Brooke Kettler of Oxford; his mother, who still lives in Shelbyville; and sisters, Kathy Griffey of Cicero, Ind., and Martha Krieger of Bloomington, Ind.
Services: 10 a.m. Monday on campus in Kumler Chapel. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Smith-Ogle Funeral Home, Oxford.
