Paul C. Assum: Badge symbol of pride
Retired Cincinnati police specialist Paul C. Assum died Monday. He was 73.
Mr. Assum served in the division for 25 years before retiring in 1977, and handed down a special token to his son, who also served as a Cincinnati police officer.
"Our badge number was 27, which dad gave to me. The number remained in our family for 43 years until I retired in 1995," said Jim Assum. "Signal 27 in police radio language always meant "Out of service,' and dad's out of service now."
Mr. Assum served with the 4th Marine Division in the Pacific during World War II.
He leaves his wife of 52 years, Connie Assum; daughter, Laura Assum Dahleen of Honolulu, Hawaii; other sons, Dave Assum and Ron Assum, both of Cincinnati; and five grandchildren.
Mass: 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Cecilia Church, Oakley. Visitation: 5 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Witt, Good and Kelsch Funeral Home, Oakley.

Virgil Pratt, veteran and police sergeant
Virgil H. Pratt, a retired Cincinnati police officer, died Monday from complications of a stroke. At his retirement in 1973, he had achieved the rank of sergeant and was a top investigator.
Mr. Pratt, 77, of Newberry, Fla., joined the police force in 1948. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II and was wounded in the South Pacific.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the Masons.
He leaves his wife, Mary Lou; daughters, Michelle J. Davis, of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Virginia L. Misch, of Newberry, Fla.; son, Robert, of Westwood; nine grandchildren and eight great-grand-children.
Services were private. Memorials: Shriners Burns Institute.

Lillian Althea Wright Holt, respected cook
Lillian Althea Wright Holt, a retired cook from Evanston, died Monday. She was 87.
Mrs. Holt, who cooked for three generations of the Shaffer family, of Hyde Park, retired in 1987.
Despite retirement, Mrs. Holt often cooked for special functions and occasions.
The Macon, Ga., native attended Hudson High School and the nursing program at Betta Etta College in Macon for two years. In 1927, she married Glasco Holt and moved to Cincinnati in 1944. Her husband died in 1987.
She was an active member of Metropolitan C.M.E. Church, Walnut Hills for more than 40 years.
She leaves two sons, Joseph Kennedy Holt of Cincinnati and Donald F. Holt of Salina, Calif.; a sister, Pauline Williams, of New York, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services: 1 p.m. today at McKenzie Funeral Home, Avondale. Visitation: noon today at the funeral home.

Cleveland Lawson, was police lieutenant
Cleveland Lawson spent 30 years with the Cincinnati Police Division and became the first African-American to reach the ranks of sergeant and lieutenant.
He also directed the traffic and youth aid sections of the city police division.
Mr. Lawson, formerly of Avondale, died Tuesday at Victoria Retirement Community in Norwood. He was 80.
He joined the force in 1941 and worked in District 1, which covers downtown and parts of Over-the-Rhine.
In 1949, he was promoted to sergeant and then to lieutenant in 1953.
He received numerous commendations for his police work and for his community work.
He retired in 1971.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Queen City Bridge Club.
Survivors include daughters, Sylvia Lawson of Colerain Township, Juanita Anderson of Roselawn and Kathy Hankerson, both of Madisonville; sons, Michael Walker of Hollydale, Peter Williams of Finneytown, Eddie Williams of Colerain Township and Gary Williams of Avondale; brothers, Cessie Lawson of College Hill and Clinton Lawson of Avondale; a sister, Fannie Mae Wyatt of Pittsburgh; 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services for Mr. Lawson will be at 11 a.m. today at Thompson, Hall and Jordan Funeral Home, Forest Park.
Visitation will be 9 a.m. today at the funeral home.
