Lillian Betz Rowan, 81, a pianist who performed the standards in area clubs and restaurants, died Sunday. She resided at Twin Towers Nursing Home, College Hill.
Mrs. Rowan, who played from 1937 until she was in her 70s at Sorrento's Restaurant in Reading, also had been an occasional guest on "The Paul Dixon Show" that aired on Channel 5 between 1955 and 1974.
From the 1950s through the 1970s, she played at Six Mile House and at numerous gatherings and functions.
"It was very amazing," her son, Thomas Rowan of Greater Cincinnati, said of his mother's musical abilities. "She learned to play by ear and taught herself to read music at 50 years of age.
"She still played piano until about a year ago. And until a month ago, she could put her hands on the piano and smile," Rowan said. "She made a lot of people happy."
In her later years, Mrs. Rowan worked at the Cincinnati Fire Museum. She also played piano for charity events.
A memorial will be held in the summer, and will feature the music she loved, her son said. Memorials may be made in her name to the Alois Alzheimer Center.
