George Archibald, veteran and firefighter

George David Archibald, 53, a retired Cincinnati firefighter, died of cancer Tuesday.

The Oakley resident was a 30-year veteran of the Cincinnati Fire Division and a U.S. Army veteran who fought in Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart.

"People will always remember his willingness to help," said Tom Ruff, his brother-in-law. "Anything that needed to be done, he'd be there with his van or truck to lend a helping hand . . . he was very family oriented."

An avid fisherman who also enjoyed camping, Mr. Archibald was a member of the National Rifle Association.

He also leaves his mother, Mary Noe Archibald; brothers, Tom, Joe and William; and sister, Linda Ruff.

Mass: 10 a.m. Friday at St. Cecilia Church, Oakley. Visitation: 5 p.m. today at Witt-Good and Kelsch Funeral Home, Oakley. Memorials: American Cancer Society.

Lana Baynum, devoted to Reds

Even at the age of 94, Lana Nodler Baynum of Ft. Wright, Ky., never missed a Cincinnati Reds game.

"She loved the Reds," said a granddaughter, Darla Faris of Erlanger, Ky.

"Johnny Bench was her boy. His pictures were hanging in her apartment.

"We had to get a (Reds) schedule and have it enlarged, so she'd know when they'd be on. On this past Opening Day, we called down (to the nursing home) to make sure they knew it was on and she'd want to see it."

Ms. Baynum, 94, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood, Ky.

Ms. Baynum, a member of Erlanger Baptist Church, worked as an office clerk with R. L. Polk Co. in Cincinnati until she retired at the age of 62.

Her grandchildren "always enjoyed spending nights with her, eating peaches and ice cream, those kinds of things," said her daughter, Alice J. Gray of Erlanger.

Other survivors are a son, Gilbert R. Baynum of Melbourne, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.

Memorials are suggested to Erlanger Baptist Church, 116 Commonwealth Ave., Erlanger, Ky. 41018.

Rev. Donnul Suttmann, Franciscan pastor

Rev. Donnul Suttmann, a Franciscan priest and associate pastor at St. Clement Church in St. Bernard since 1993, died Thursday at the St. Clare Retirement Community in Wyoming.

Ordained in 1953, Father Suttmann, 72, was an educator who later in life took up pastoral ministry.

His first assignment was teaching at Roger Bacon High School, where he also coached freshman football and baseball teams until 1963. He was principal of Bishop Luers High School in Fort Wayne, Ind., and later principal, math teacher and rector at St. Francis Seminary (now St. Francis Center) in Mt. Healthy.

In 1993, he moved to St. Clement Church in St. Bernard, but a protracted battle with cancer last year forced him to take a medical leave of absence.

Father Suttmann leaves his sister, Dorothy Suttmann Doll of Oldenburg, Ind.; and brother, Al Suttmann of Sugarcreek Township, Ohio.

Mass: 7:30 p.m. Monday at St. Clement Church. Visitation: 6 p.m. Monday at the church. Memorials: Roger Bacon High School, St. Clement Elementary School or Franciscan Formation Fund.

William J. Weitzel, city cop for 27 years

William J. Weitzel, 86, who served 27 years as a Cincinnati police officer, died Saturday.

The Western Hills resident spent 17 years in District 3, then served in District 2 until retiring in 1970. One remarkable incident in his career involved a major explosion in Sayler Park, in which a gasoline truck was hit by an auto. The force of the blast knocked Mr. Weitzel out of his cruiser but he survived and was able to return to the call.

After retirement, he worked for Cincinnati Bell. Mr. Weitzel was a 58-year member of Cheviot Lodge 140 F&AM and also a member of the Scottish Rite and Fraternal Order of Police.

He leaves his wife of 63 years, Margaret; daughter, Carolyn Pott; brother, Robert Weitzel; sister Edna Hayden; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 8 p.m. today at Bolton & Lunsford Funeral Home, Westwood. Visitation: 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials: Shriners Hospital or Vitas Hospice.
