Emma Bertha Burleigh, 100, a 'grand and gracious lady'

The Evansville, Ind., native celebrated her 100th birthday Feb. 11 in Rabbit Hash, Ky., where she resided with her son.
A niece, Nancy DeVoe, of Evansville, described her "Aunt Emma" as the family matriarch and an inspiration. "She had a sense of humor that never failed her," Mrs. DeVoe said.
Tom Tuley, retired Evansville Courier president and editor, remembered Mrs. Burleigh as "very young at heart. She would often call me with an idea or a comment about the Courier. She had some good thoughts."
He recalled that Mrs. Burleigh "was unhappy being away from Evansville (after she moved to Northern Kentucky) until Bill thought to subscribe to the Evansville Courier for her. That really made a difference in her life."
Mrs. Burleigh's roots in Evansville go back to the 1940s, when her grandfather Bernard J. Enneking co-owned a jewelry store. She was the oldest living member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Evansville.
The Rev. Joseph Ziliak, a childhood friend of William Burleigh, remembers her as a "grand and gracious lady. Her house was always open to the kids, and she was always supportive and encouraging of her family, friends and community.
"She was possessed of a mind and spirit of far-ranging interests."
Mrs. Burleigh also leaves a daughter, Charlotte Ann Dissette, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Joseph C. Burleigh, died in 1978.
