John Wessling, was Post sports editor
John E. Wessling, a former sports editor of The Kentucky Post, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood, Ky.
Mr. Wessling, who lived in Villa Hills, was 68.
Mr. Wessling worked for The Post for 20 years. He left to work as a writer and photographer with the Cincinnati office of Fairchild Publications.
He enjoyed traveling, boating and shooting photographs. Mr. Wessling also loved visiting Germany, Greece and France, said his wife Helen.
In his spare time, Mr. Wessling enjoyed helping people in need.
"He just had a soft heart," his wife said. "He was a sweet, loving man who was very gentle and kind."
Mr. Wessling also loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he also leaves his two daughters, Kathy Brandner of Hamilton, Ohio, and Fredda Simpson of Venice, Calif.; son, Robert Clark Simpson of El Paso, Texas ; sister, Rita Pflueger of Ft. Thomas; brother, Ralph Wessling of New Port Richey, Fla.; and five grandchildren.
Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs, Ky.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger, Ky.

George V. Horton, spent 40 years
with Scripps Howard newspapers
George Vreeland Horton, who held numerous top advertising and business positions coast to coast during 40 years with Scripps Howard Newspapers, died June 2 in Stuart, Fla., where he lived in retirement. He was 92.
Mr. Horton was president and business manager of the Indianapolis Times from 1955 until it was closed in 1966. Early in his career, his many other Scripps Howard assignments included managing of advertising offices in Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and Atlanta.
"He was a brilliant guy," said Edward W. Estlow, retired president and CEO of The E. W. Scripps Co. "He had such a sharp, quick mind and attractive personality that the company placed a great deal of faith in him and gave him a lot of responsibility."
After graduation from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1928, Mr. Horton was hired as a secretary in the New York office of Roy W. Howard, then chairman of Scripps Howard. At Penn, Mr. Horton had been assistant business manager of the Daily Pennsylvania n and business manager of the Pennsylvania n Pictorial, displaying a knack for sales in both capacities.
Just weeks into his Scripps Howard career, he was transferred to promotion and national advertising in the New York office. By age 25, he was advertising director of the San Diego Sun.
Except for his service as a Navy officer during World War II, Mr. Horton's only employer was Scripps Howard. He retired in 1970 from Atlanta, where he headed national advertising sales in the Southeast for Scripps Howard.
In each of the cities where he worked, he was active in numerous civic and professional organizations, from press and advertising clubs and associations with school boards.
Mr. Horton leaves his wife of 55 years, Barbara Marshall Horton; sons, Alan of Cincinnati, senior vice president of The E. W. Scripps Co. and head of its newspaper division, and John of Neptune Beach, Fla., a retired Navy captain; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Rita Doepke, mother and active volunteer
Hyde Park resident Rita Corinne Romell Doepke, 82, died Tuesday. A homemaker, real estate agent and a deacon at Seventh Presbyterian Church in Walnut Hills, Mrs. Doepke made a point of being devoted to family and community.
The Vassar College graduate also gave her time to the Junior League of Cincinnati, Meals on Wheels, the Civic Garden Center and the Cincinnati Zoo, the United Way, FreeStore/FoodBank and the Red Cross.
She was a member of the Cincinnati Country Club and the University Club, and also supported fine arts organizations.
Despite her numerous responsibilities, her family said, she raised her children in a loving, supportive and generous environment.
She leaves her husband, Robert Page Doepke; sons, Eric Doepke, Andrew Doepke, Robert Doepke Jr. and David Doepke, all of Cincinnati; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Durkin services will be in Ky.
Funeral services for Cheryl Ann Durkin, the 34-year-old woman whose body was found in the Great Miami River in April, will be on Sunday in Berea, Ky.
Authorities identified Ms. Durkin's body last month after comparing DNA from the torso with a blood sample from her mother.
Ms. Durkin had moved to Middletown, Ohio, earlier this year after living for a time in Dreyfus, Ky. Authorities said she died sometime before April 13. Her torso was found in the river in Hamilton, Ohio.
The Butler County Sheriff's Department continues to investigate the case but has made no arrests.
Survivors are her mother, Dorothy Webb Bond, of Dreyfus, Ky.; seven brothers, David Caudill, Brian Caudill, Roger Durkin and Perry Bond, all of the Dreyfus, Ky., area, Mike Caudill, of Kenton, Ohio, Tim Durkin, of Middletown, and Gary Caudill, of Oklahoma; and a sister, Karla Edwards, of Madison Township.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Williams Funeral Home in Berea, Ky. Visitation will be at 6 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Anne E. Beil made others happy
Anne E. Beil loved to be around people.
She constantly surrounded herself with family and friends, and she never made anyone feel out of place.
"She was one of the happiest people I've ever known, and she made sure everyone around her was happy," said Mrs. Beil's daughter, Connie Beil of Lighthouse Point, Fla.
"Her high school graduation class had about 35 people in it, and she still talks to about 14 of them."
Mrs. Beil, 73, of Edgewood, Ky., died at 4:15 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a retired tax examiner for the Internal Revenue Service. After she retired, she devoted her life not only to her family, but also to people she didn't even know.
Her volunteer projects included work at St. Charles Care Center and Catholic Children's Home in Ft. Mitchell.
Additional survivors include her husband, Paul Beil; another daughter, Patricia Royster of Bagdad, Fla.; and a brother, John McKeon of Hollywood, Fla.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Pius X Church, Edgewood. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow, Ky.
