George Brackmann, Post executive
George A. Brackmann, 83, a retired Cincinnati Post circulation director, died early Tuesday.
Mr. Brackmann, who began his newspaper career as an 8-year-old newsboy selling daily papers on street corners, retired as circulation director in 1980.
Since retiring, he worked as a volunteer in admissions at Franciscan Hospital-Mt. Airy, enjoyed his family and watching the Cincinnati Reds.
"He was a wonderful storyteller and loved to talk about newspapers and baseball," said his daughter, Maribeth Richter, of Fairfield, Ohio. "He worked his way up (in the newspaper business).
From an 8-year-old newsboy, Mr. Brackmann progressed to a carrier, a supply boy, to city district manager, assistant city circulation manager, to city circulation manager and ultimately circulation director.
But it was that early work as a supply boy that prepared him for his newspaper circulation management career, Mr. Brackmann said in a Post interview.
"At 14, 15, 16 years old, we were being taught by our district managers how to order wholesale merchandise, to sell retail, to return unsold merchandise, to check invoices, to hire and fire other kids."
After graduating from Roger Bacon High School, he went on the full-time payroll of The Post as city district manager.
A longtime member of St. James Church of White Oak, he was also a former member of the Ohio Circulation Managers Association and the International Circulation Managers Associations.
Mr. Brackmann is survived by his wife of 58 years, Virginia; three other daughters: Donna Oliphant of Largo, Fla., Georganne Paulus of Indianapolis, Ind., and Barbara Hardewig of Cincinnati; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Mass: 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. James Church of White Oak. Visitation: 8:30 a.m. Friday at Frederick Funeral Home, Groesbeck. Memorials: charity of choice.
