William Ransohoff, noted physician

Dr. William Ransohoff, 78, a noted internist from a longtime Cincinnati medical family, died Sunday at his home in Clifton.

He had long suffered from a serious heart ailment but continued his practice until about two years ago.

A founder of the program in psychosomatic medicine at the University of Cincinnati's department of psychiatry, Dr. Ransohoff was a pioneer in relating physical illness to mental problems, which led to the understanding of such things as post-traumatic stress syndrome.

He was a clinical professor of medicine at the UC College of Medicine and maintained a private practice more than 50 years.

And at the end of his practice, he still made house calls.

"He didn't make many, but he would go to the house if somebody couldn't get to the office himself," said Dr. Ransohoff's brother, Jerry.

Dr. Ransohoff was also the brother of the late Daniel Ransohoff, Cincinnati historian. All three brothers grew up in Clifton, Jerry said, and none moved more than half a mile from their family home.

Dr. Ransohoff attended Walnut Hills High School, Williams College and received his medical degree from the UC College of Medicine. He served at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C., during World War II.

He served his residency at Massachussetts Memorial Hospital, then went into practice here with his father-in-law, Dr. Hiram B. Weiss.

Dr. Ransohoff was following a family tradition. His grandfather, Joseph Ransohoff, was a professor of surgery and dermatology at the UC College of Medicine, and a great-uncle, also named Joseph, was a surgeon. Three cousins - Dr. Bob Rothenberg, Dr. Helen Gleuck and Dr. Charles Gleuck - also were physicians.

Dr. Ransohoff's son, David Ransohoff, is professor of gastroenterology and a nephew, Richard Ransohoff, is a neuroscientist.

Dr. Ransohoff also leaves his wife, Regine Weiss Ransohoff; other sons, Paul Ransohoff of Menlo Park, Calif., and Daniel Ransohoff of Cincinnati; daughter, Martha Adler of Chevy Chase, Md.; and nine grandchildren.
