Jamico Damon Thomas, 4, burns victim
Jamico Damon Thomas was like most little boys.
He smiled a lot and had many friends in the Pendleton neighborhood where he lived. The 4- year-old boy loved to play with toy cars, said his mother Vickie Thomas, 24.
"He was very outgoing and knew everybody," she said. "He liked cars. He'd just sit around and play with them for hours."
But Jamico lost a battle for life he'd been waging since he was burned May 6 in a fire set in an attic bedroom where he had been sleeping.
He had sustained burns over 88 percent of his body.
Though his condition at Shriners Burns Institute had been upgraded from critical to serious this week, and doctors told Ms. Thomas he would be coming home in four to six weeks, Jamico died at 3 a.m. Thursday.
She said doctors believe his death may have been caused by a seizure. It came as a shock after she had spent the day with him playing in the hospital's play room. He had even tried walking. She was with him when he died.
Two of Jamico's sisters were in the room with him the day of the fire. One apparently had been playing under the bed with a lighter.
Ms. Thomas said she had warned her children about the dangers of fire and they have taken fire safety classes since then. One sister, 8-year-old Mykya Thomas, also was injured but was released from the hospital after a two-week stay.
The children's grandmother, Paulette Thomas, rescued the children from the attic when she heard the smoke detector go off.
Ms. Thomas said her daughters are having a hard time coping with their brother's death.
But people can prevent such tragedies, she said.
"Parents must keep the lighters out of reach of children, and keep an eye on the children," she said.
Jamico also is survived by his father, Harold Watson of Avondale and three sisters, Mykya, Shalinda and Jahsheah Thomas.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Thompson, Hall and Jordan Funeral Home, 2625 Gilbert Ave. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Shriners Burns Institute.
