NELLIE MAE WHITAKER, 85, of Aurora, Ind., died Sunday. She was an agent with Wabash Life Insurance Co. Services: 11 a.m. EDT Thursday at Rullman Funeral Home, Aurora. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. EDT Wednesday at the funeral home.

Joseph Enginger: 'Ultimate role model'

Joseph Enginger, who will be inducted into the Roger Bacon High School Hall of Fame in January, died Tuesday at the age of 80.

In 1935, he pitched the only state baseball championship game the school has won in its history.

Mr. Enginger, of Mack, also was a former member of the Cheviot City Council for 11 years and a Hamilton County building inspector.

"He was the ultimate role model as a father. He always made time for everyone," his son Jay said.

Mr. Enginger was co-owner of the Cheviot Welding Service in Green Township. He was a member of the Cheviot, Green Township and Hamilton County Republican clubs, the Green Township Seniors and helped form the Cub Scouts at St. Martin Church in Cheviot.

He leaves his wife of 57 years, Alma Jobst Enginger; other sons, Donald, David and Gregory; daughters, Mary Jo Hornsby and Marcia Peterman; sister, Margie Schwartz, 13 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Mass: 11:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Jude Church, Bridgetown. Visitation: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church. Arrangements: Neihard-Minges Funeral Home. Memorials: St. Jude Building Fund, Roger Bacon Alumni Association, Green Township Fire Department or Vitas Hospice.

Betty Swenson, writer and restaurant owner

Although Betty Swenson fought cancer for the past 14 years, she spent many hours visiting and caring for other cancer patients.

"She would sit and pray with them," said her husband, Dave Swenson. "She was a very religious person, a very pleasant person."

Mrs. Swenson, of Delhi Township, died Sunday at University Hospital. She was 62.

"She simply loved people and she smiled all the time. She had a belief: "Give away all of your smiles and use up all of your laughter in your lifetime,' " he said.

The Swensons operated Swenson's Drive In Restaurant on Ferguson Road in Western Hills from 1960 to 1970. From 1976 to 1990 the couple co-authored a column, "How 'Bout That" that ran in Newsmonth, a monthly newspaper, and in the Skywalk News, a downtown weekly.

Mrs. Swenson recently worked at the HQ hardware store in Western Hills. She also volunteered at the Our Lady of Victory School cafeteria.

Mrs. Swenson also leaves her father, Fred Fritz.

Service for Bothwells

Fred Wood Bothwell, 76, of Kennedy Heights, died Tuesday.

The General Electric retiree was an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Pearl Antoinette Bothwell, died July 23.

Services for both will be at 7 o'clock tonight at Thompson, Hall and Jordan Funeral Home, Silverton. Visitation is 6 o'clock at the funeral home.

Edward W. Kreimer, owned fruit business

Edward W. Kreimer, 75, who owned and operated Cedar Avenue Fruit Market for 25 years, died Sunday.

Mr. Kreimer, of Monfort Heights, also was a former president of the College Hill Business Association, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He also was a member of the Bogey Benders Golf Club.

He leaves his wife, Martha G. Kramer Kreimer; sons Earl Kreimer, Edward Kreimer and Gregory Kreimer; daughters Ann Inderhees, Mary Helen Hudepohl, Judy Busken, Donna Keller, Terrie Meiser and Betsy Vietor; sisters Helen Fuller, Margaret Keilholz-Tamblyn, Sister Irvin Marie and Esther Philhower; 24 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mass: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Ignatius Church, Monfort Heights. Visitation: 5 p.m. today at Neidhard-Minges Funeral Home, Westwood. Memorials: Glenmary Home Missioners.

Sister Mary Bathildis, cook

Sister Mary Bathildis, who spent 66 years as a Sister of Notre Dame, died Wednesday at the order's campus in Park Hills, Ky. The former Elizabeth Hinrichs was 86.

She often dished out healthy doses of advice and wisdom along with her cooking specialties of roast beef and hamburgers, said longtime friend Sister Shauna Bankemper.

"As we were getting into religious life, we helped in the kitchen as novices. She would take you under her wing, teach you the tricks of the trade and support you. She appeared to be gruff but she was a teddy bear inside."

Kenneth Navaro, owned realty company

Kenneth E. Navaro, 64, owner of KEN Realty, Inc., in Anderson Township, died of cancer Tuesday.

The lifelong resident of Mt. Washington and Anderson Township was a graduate of Purcell High School, attended the University of Cincinnati and was a Korean War veteran.

He leaves his wife, Sherron; children Kenneth, Karen and Kelly Navaro, all of Anderson Township; brother, Richard Navaro of Montgomery; sisters, Evelyn Knabb of Pierce Township, Janice Otten of Reading, Beverly Helton of Danridge, Tenn., Sister Margie Navaro, O.S.J., of Nicaragua; and a grandchild.
