Women's rights champion Ann Buford Mitchell dies

Ann Buford Mitchell, a pioneer in the fight for women's reproductive rights and long-time executive director of Planned Parenthood of Cincinnati, has died from complications of surgery.

She died Friday at her home at Sea Pines Plantation on Hilton Head Island, S.C., where she had lived since April.

"She was a tremendous leader and an unwavering force in support of family planning and a woman's right to choose abortion," said former Cincinnati Mayor and City Council Member Bobbie Sterne.

Kathy Helmbock, of the National Organization for Women, said Mrs. Mitchell was "an outstanding defender of women's rights through reproductive health and freedom and she was steadfast in her resolve that this freedom never be taken away rom women.

"Her resolve and steadfastness remained in the face of an enormous amount of hostility and difficulty."

Mrs. Mitchell, who took over Planned Parenthood of Cincinnati in 1967, had been at the center of the reproductive-rights battle since before the U.S. Supreme Court first ruled that abortion was legal in 1973, and Cincinnati opened its first abortion clinic in 1974.

Then, twice in the mid-1970s, fires were set at Planned Parenthood centers in Cincinnati, and in December 1985, the Margaret Sanger Center in Mt. Auburn was destroyed by a fire bomb. Mrs. Mitchell led the effort to immediately build a new clinic.

"When the Sanger Center was fire-bombed, most people saw hate, ashes and destruction," said Alphonse A. Gerhardstein,

friend and attorney who represented Planned Parenthood.

"Ann saw beyond that and inspired staff and supporters alike to create a new, state-of-the-art clinic. . .She was an inspiring crusader for women's rights....She was a great lady."

Director of Planned Parenthood of Cincinnati for 21 years until her retirement in 1989, she attended Western College for Women in Oxford, Ohio, and received a bachelor's degree in zoology from the University of Cincinnati in 1947.

She became interested in family planning as a young mother in San Francisco when she did volunteer work among poor immigrants and their children.

"I got into this whole field because of my deep conviction that we should value children more . . . that people who choose to have children understand their responsibilities of parenthood," she said in a 1983 interview.

In her book, "There's Always Trouble in 'River City,' " Mrs. Mitchell recorded her experiences here.

"It has always been my hope that a truce in this idiotic 'holy war' could be called and that each side would embrace a mighty campaign to end the suffering, mutilation, abandonment and murder of any one of our children," she wrote. "We need to learn how to cherish every child born into this world."

Mrs. Mitchell was the recipient of many awards, including the Civil Liberties Award from the Cincinnati Civil Liberties Union; the Woman of Achievement Award of the Cincinnati

Women's Political Caucus, and the Distinguished Alumnae Award from the Friends of Women's Studies of the University of Cincinnati.

She leaves two daughters and a son and six grandchildren. A celebration of her life will be held at 3 p.m. Aug. 30 at the First Unitarian Church, Linton Street and Reading Road. Memorials may be made to the Planned Parenthood Association of Cincinnati Area, the Cincinnati Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union or the charity of choice.
