Rev. Bernard J. Felix, longtime pastor

The Rev. Bernard J. Felix, who served in the Roman Catholic priesthood for 60 years, died Saturday at St. Margaret Hall in Madisonville. He was 88.

He studied at St. Gregory and Mt. St. Mary seminaries in Cincinnati and was ordained in 1937. Father Felix was associate pastor at the following Cincinnati parishes: St. Michael from 1937-1939; St. Agnes, 1939-43; St. Aloysius in Bridgetown, 1948-51. He then served as administrator of St. Aloysius from 1951-53.

Following that, he was administrator of the former Mother of God Mission, Cincinnati, 1943-48. He was appointed director of the Catholic Youth Organization and Catholic Boy Scouts in 1943. He also served on the faculty of Elder High School in Price Hill from 1944-48.

Among other churches where he served as pastor were Our Lady of Good Hope, Miamisburg, 1955-56; Holy Redeemer, New Bremen, 1956-58; St. Susanna, Mason, 1958-62; Our Lady of the Rosary, Greenhills, 1962-71, and St. John Fisher, Newtown, 1971-77.

Reception of the body is 4 to 7:30 p.m. today at St. John Fisher Church, Newtown. Mass will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Arrangements: Nurre Bros. Funeral Home.

Bob Curtis, helped youngest AIDS patients

Bob Curtis did everything he could to ease the pain of children with AIDS.

For the last four years, Mr. Curtis raised money, sent Valentines, collected food and helped children in many other ways through For Aids Children Everywhere - known as FACE - of Cincinnati.

"He got really concerned because he always liked children," said his wife, Mary Curtis of Newport. "He could never do enough to help them."

Mr. Curtis, 70, of Covington, died Sunday. He was a retired retail merchant and a member of the board of directors of FACE. He had lived in Middletown, Ohio, for many years, then moved to Cincinnati and finally Covington.

Mr. Curtis would gather cacti on trips to  Oklahoma and sell them in Cincinnati to raise money for FACE.

"He organized fund-raisers. He had cactus sales. He asked everybody if they had any good clothing. He was never too busy," Mrs. Curtis said, adding, "FACE was his ruling passion."

Robert Huesing, worked 42 years for CG&E

Robert B. Huesing, 66, who worked 42 years at Cincinnati Gas & Electric Co., died Sunday.

Mr. Huesing worked his way up the ranks at CG&E from cashier to director of the data processing department. After retiring in 1992, he began handling the finances for St. Paul Church in Florence, Ky.

Mr. Huesing, of Burlington, Ky., was a graduate of Thomas More College and an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

He leaves his wife of 36 years, Nancy; a daughter, Karen Anderson of Loveland, Ohio; sons, Jerry Huesing of Erlanger, Ky., and Steve Huesing of Colorado Springs, Colo.; brothers, Dr. Jack Huesing of Mason and the Rev. Paul Huesing of Boulder, Colo.; sisters, Lorraine Panagapoulos of Crestview Hills, Ky., and Betty Ludwig of Fort Wright, Ky.; and eight grandchildren.

Mass: 10 a.m. Friday at St. Paul Church. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Luella Schroeder, political and civic leader

Longtime community and political activist and one-time candidate for Congress Luella Schroeder died at Jewish Hospital Sunday. She was 76.

The former Fairfield, Ohio, resident was a founding or past member of more than 16 different organizations, including the United Way, League of Women Voters, Hamilton YWCA board, Women's Crisis Shelter in Butler County, the Butler County Council on Aging and the Women's Equity League.

She also belonged to several political groups and spent four terms as the Ohio Democratic State Central Committeewoman for the 8th Congressional District. In 1978, she was a Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives 8th District seat in Ohio.

The Fort Thomas, Ky., resident married William B. Schroeder after graduating from Berea College and the couple moved to Fairfield. Mr. Schroeder died in 1978.

In the 1960s, she became involved in the Democratic Party and Democratic Women's League. She worked on the campaigns of U.S. Sen. Howard Metzenbaum and presidential candidate Walter Mondale. In 1974, she was a delegate to the National Democratic Party Conference. Between 1974 and 1986, she was elected the 8th District Democratic State Central Committeewoman four times.

In 1980, Ms. Schroeder was elected to the Fairfield City Council and served for one year.

She became the League of Women Voters' representative on the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments, serving as a member of the board of trustees and executive committee from 1980 to 1981. She was the vice chair of the OKI Air Quality Task Force in 1978.

She was a founding member of the Butler County Human Services Council, the Women's Equity Action League of Southern Ohio, the Butler County National Organization for Women and the Hamilton-Fairfield League of Women Voters. She was honored by the Butler County National Organization for Women as the "Feminist of the Year" in 1983.

Upon moving to Fort Thomas, she became publicist for the Unitarian Universalists of Northern Kentucky and a member of the Campbell County Historical and Geological Society.

She leaves a sister, Mae Class of Highland Heights, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul United Church of Christ, Fort Thomas. Mrs. Schroeder donated her body to medical science. Memorials: American Heart Association.

William Straus, served in Highland Heights

William Lee Straus, 73, a retired salesman with Universal Joint Service in Cincinnati, died July 24.

The former Highlands Heights, Ky., resident was living in Largo, Fla., where he was a member of the Largo Elks. He was a former member of Alexandria Masonic Lodge 152 F&AM, the Highland Heights Fire Department and city council. He was a World War II veteran.

Mr. Straus leaves a daughter, LeAnn Cummins of Highland Heights; brother, Richard Straus of Bellevue, Ky.; and three grandchildren.
