William Dobbs, war veteran and piano tuner

William Ellis Dobbs, a retired piano tuner and regulator with Baldwin Piano Co. in Cincinnati, died Tuesday. He was 82.

During World War II, the St. Bernard native who lived in Dayton, Ky., served in North Africa, Italy and Germany with the Army.

"He was a radio man on the P-38 Lightnings," said a son, Tom Dobbs, of Villa Hills, Ky. "He loved airplanes."

Mr. Dobbs, who also played on the Army baseball team, returned from the war in 1945 and took a job with Baldwin, where he worked until the late 1970s. He wasn't a trained musician, but he enjoyed music, his son said. "He just had a good ear for music."

Mr. Dobbs also leaves sons, James Dobbs of Dayton, Ky., and William Dobbs Jr. of Los Angeles; brother, Chester Dobbs of Long Beach, Calif.; sister, Ruby Rhodes of Cambridge, Ohio; and two grandchildren. His wife, Ann, died in 1990.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue, Ky. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Marjorie "Nana' Robertson,

composer Bach's great-niece

Marjorie "Nana" Robertson was the sixth great niece of classical composer Johann Sebastian Bach.

She also had the distinction of being Ohio's oldest naturalized citizen when she was sworn in as a citizen March 13.

Mrs. Robertson, 91, of Decatur, Ohio, died Wednesday at her grandson's home, where she lived.

Born in Lancashire, England, on Jan. 31, 1907, she left that country when she was 21 and moved to the Fiji Islands. There she worked as a beauti cian until 1985, when she came to the United States and Decatur.

Survivors include a daughter, Pearl Pardoe Smith of Sardinia; a sister, Joan Wesley of England; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. today at the Cahall Funeral Home in Georgetown. Visitation: 1 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials to the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra or the Asthma Research Foundation.

Dr. Lusia Hornstein survived Holocaust, became pediatrician

Dr. Lusia Hornstein was a Holocaust survivor who lost her entire immediate family in the Nazi extermination effort against the Jews in World War II.

During the Nazi occupation of Poland, she fought in the Polish underground and participated in the Warsaw Uprising for which she was declared a "Hero of the City of Warsaw."

Dr. Hornstein, of North Avondale, died of ovarian cancer Wednesday. She was 73.

She was a professor emeritus of pediatrics at Children's Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

"She was one of the most caring, concerned and sensitive physicians I have known," said Dr. Peter Dignan, a professor emeritus of pediatrics at Children's who worked with Dr. Hornstein for 35 years. "She worked tirelessly for the causes of children with developmental disabilities and their families. Her honesty, integrity, knowledge and common sense were an example to us all."

Born in Lvov, Poland, Dr. Hornstein attended medical school at Heidelberg University in Germany after the war, where she married Dr. Stephen Hornstein in 1948. In 1951 the couple immigrated to the United States.

She completed her internship at Beth Israel Hospital in Newark, N.J., and her pediatric residency at Children's, where she specialized in treating children with developmental disabilities.

As a longtime pediatric director of the Cincinnati Center for Developmental Disorders, she was nationally recognized for her work with special needs children. She received the American Williams Society Distinguished Service Award for her work with children with Williams Syndrome in 1989.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Dr. Mark Hornstein of Westwood, Ma., and Frank Hornstein of Minneapolis; a daughter, Ruth Hornstein of Minneapolis; and six grandchildren.

Services are at noon today at the Weil Funeral Home, 3901 Reading Road. Memorials to Self-help Community Services, attention Nazi Victims Fund, 440 9th Ave., New York, N.Y. 10001.

Mathew Bahns, auditor in Detroit

Mathew S. Bahns, 23, an auditor at PriceWaterhouseCoopers in Detroit and a former Cincinnatian, died Aug. 2 of injuries suffered in a car accident.

Mr. Bahns, a 1997 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, spent several years of his childhood in Cincinnati.

His family moved to Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., in 1991, and he graduated from De La Salle Collegiate High School in Warren, Mich., where he was a member of the state champion soccer team, in 1993.

He was a fine athlete who also excelled at golf.

"Mat was a great kid," said his father, Frank Dunham, a former Cincinnatian now living in Columbus.

"People will remember how good he was to his younger sisters. He was everyone's friend. He was an easy-going guy."

Other survivors include his mother, JoAnn Dunham; and sisters, Christina and Kimberly Dunham, of Columbus.

Chas. Verheyden Funeral Home in Grosse Point Park, Mich., was in charge of arrangements. Memorials: University of Notre Dame.

Rev. Harvey Schaller, 61-year priest

Rev. Harvey Bartholomew Schaller, O.P., former pastor of St. Andrew Church and the St. Gertrude Priory in Madeira, died Thursday. He was 91.

Father Schaller was ordained in 1937 at St. Dominic Church in Washington, D.C.

He was assigned to St. Andrew's in 1948 as an assistant pastor, where he remained for more than 30 years, later becoming pastor of the church. In 1979, he was assigned to the Priory, where he was senior priest. During his tenure at St. Gertrude, he assisted at other Cincinnati Archdiocese parishes. He moved to Columbus earlier this year to retire to St. Mary of the Springs Dominican Sisters' Motherhouse nursing home.

Mass: 10 a.m. Monday at St. Gertrude Church. Reception of the body will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Priory and office of the dead will be at 8 p.m. The funeral cortege will depart for Somerset, Ohio, at 12:30 p.m., for burial in St. Joseph Cemetery near Somerset.

IVAN E. "JOHNNY" ADAMS, 71, of Higginsport, Ohio, died Wednesday. He was a service officer for the Veterans Administration and a World War II and Korean War Army veteran. Services: 2 p.m. Saturday at Cahall Funeral Home, Ripley. Visitation: 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials: Hospice of Hope.
