Deborah Smith, soccer coach

Deborah Suh Smith, a soccer, track and cross country standout at Anderson High School during the early 1980s under her maiden name, Debbie Manton, never got far from sports - or her children.

The Korean-born Mrs. Smith took a Tipp City, Ohio, team of 10-and-11-year-old girls, named them the Sharks, and taught them to play.

She died Thursday at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton after a car crash. The Tipp City, Ohio, resident was 31.

Mrs. Smith was killed after a crash on a straight Miami County roadway. As a motor route carrier for the Dayton Daily News, she was following the usual practice of driving her Ford Aspire on the opposite side of the road, delivering papers, when her car was struck. Her husband said it wasn't the crash, but the airbag, that caused the internal injuries that killed his 4-foot-11-inch wife.

After the wreck, she walked around the car, pulled out daughter Ashley, 10, and son Joshua, 7, and told them to walk to a nearby house. "And then she laid down."

Anderson track and cross country coach Andy Wolf remembers her as "just an excellent competitor, a tough kid and always smiling. That was the first really good (girls' cross country) team we had."

Her young soccer players in Tipp City - who were about the same size and weight as she was - respected her, her husband said.

"She knew what she was talking about. And not only that, she would get out there and go one-on-one with them. It was like she was another kid. Debbie was an outstanding soccer player. She'd show them slide kicks and everything."

The Smiths were married the November after her 1985 high school graduation.

"The one thing she wanted in life was a husband, kids and a house," he said. "Basically, she had everything she wanted."

She also is survived by a daughter Samantha, 11; her parents, Harry J. and Patricia K. Manton of Anderson Township; brother Mark W. Manton of Anderson Township; and sister Theresa L. Joy of Wilsonville, Ore.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Tipp City. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. tonight at Frings & Bayliff Funeral Home in Tipp City; and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Contributions may be made to the Smith Children's Education Fund, care of the funeral home, 327 W. Main St., Tipp City, Ohio 45371-1818.
