Shirley Downey, loved life and family
Surrounded by the warmth and love of her big family, Shirley Downey died Monday night.
The 69-year-old wife of retired Cincinnati firefighter Owen Downey only recently had received the happy news of being placed on a waiting list for a liver transplant. Yet, complications from emergency surgery unexpectedly turned that hope to sorrow at University Hospital, where she had hoped the transplant would take place in the coming year.
"She was always so full of life," said her husband of 45 years. "It's hard to give her up. It's the hardest thing I've ever had to do."
Mrs. Downey, of Western Hills, was a member of St. Lawrence Church in Price Hill.
She also leaves daughters, Susan Downey of Atlanta, Ga., and Deborah McClanahan of Delhi Township; son Michael Downey of Mason, Ohio; sisters Josephine Nugent, Delores Feldman, Gilda Scarlato, Joni Probst and Toni Bailey, all of Cincinnati; brothers Larry Panaro of Chicago and John Panaro of Delhi Township; and six grandchildren. A son, Stephen K. Downey, preceded her in death.

Marie Zeigler, was dedicated to church
Marie Jackson Zeigler devoted her life to helping others in her church, Saint Michael and All Angels in North Avondale.
Mrs. Zeigler, 91, of Cincinnati, died Saturday. She wrote poetry and designed and drew her own greeting cards. In church she taught Sunday school, was a eucharistic minister, a member of the altar guild and a lay reader.
Mrs. Zeigler assisted her late husband, Penn Zeigler, with his scouting activities, and was the first lady of Lincoln Heights when he was mayor.
Having attended both Wilberforce University and the University of Cincinnati, she was a member of Delta Sigma Theta. She had a master's degree in social work.
Mrs. Zeigler is survived by a daughter, Helen Zeigler; son, Ralph Zeigler; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

David Joseph Jr., business and arts leader
David J. Joseph Jr., one of Cincinnati's strongest supporters of the arts, died Tuesday of complications from open heart surgery. He was 82.
For his decades of dedication to the arts, Mr. Joseph was honored as a "Great Living Cincinnatian" in 1991.
Mr. Joseph spent years trying to build and strengthen the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and helped develop it into one of the nation's most accomplished musical institutions.
Mr. Joseph graduated from Walnut Hills High School and Yale University. He was former director of Gradison U.S. Government Trust and Gradison Cash Reserves. He also was chief executive of the David J. Joseph Co., one of the nation's largest scrap metal companies.
He was a member of the finance committee of the Cincinnati Institute of Fine Arts, chairman of Arts Cincinnati in 1994, past chairman of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra executive board, former board member of the May Festival Association and a community advisory board member of WGUC.
Services were today at the Plum Street Temple. Friends may call on the family at its residence from 4 to 6 p.m. today and on Friday. Memorials: the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

800-pound Danny Welch, of Hamilton
Danny Welch, the 800-pound former exotic dancer who was the topic of a Jerry Springer television show, died Wednesday.
Emergency crews were summoned Wednesday afternoon to the home of Mr. Welch, 37, who had been hospitalized several times recently with diabetes., breathing ailments and high blood pressure. Cause of death was not immediately known.
Mr. Welch, who used the stage name "Eartha Quake" during his performing career, gained national attention for his health problems.
In 1996, Springer visited Mr. Welch and arranged hospital treatment. In order to transport Mr. Welch, a wall had to be removed from his home.
On May 27, Mr. Welch pleaded no contest to charges alleging he allowed three boys to view pornographic films in his home. The court hearing was conducted in his home because his weight and health problems made it difficult to move him. The case had not been resolved.

David J. Joseph Jr., one of Cincinnati's strongest supporters of the arts, died Tuesday of complications from open heart surgery. He was 82.

"He led through a quiet strength, wisdom, and example that inspired confidence and trust, and therefore a willingness to follow him."
Relative and friend Jerry Ransohoff said Mr. Joseph loved the arts and was an accomplished pianist.

Richard J. Breitbeil Sr., champion golfer
Richard J. Breitbeil Sr., a champion golfer and gardener, died Wednesday. Mr. Breitbeil, 61, lived in Bridgetown.
Mr. Breitbeil won many golf tournaments, including the Greater Cincinnati Metropolitan Senior Tournament in 1992 and 1993. He was a 20-year member of the Miami View Golf Club. When he wasn't playing golf, Mr. Breitbeil loved traveling, especially to national parks, and tending his trees and extensive garden.
A 1955 graduate of Roger Bacon High School, he also held a degree in business from Xavier University and was an armed services veteran.
He leaves daughters, Mona and Pamela Breitbeil of California, and Heidi Strauss of Washington ; son, Rick Breitbeil Jr. of Cincinnati; his mother, Clara Breitbeil; a sister, Marlene Breitbeil-Henderson; and brothers, Fred Breitbeil III and Robert Breitbeil.
