Myron Scott, founded Soap Box Derby

Myron Scott, who founded the All-American Soap Box Derby and gave the Chevrolet Corvette sports car its name, is dead at 91.

Mr. Scott, of Kettering, Ohio, died Sunday of complications from heart trouble.

For 22 years, Mr. Scott was an artist, photographer and art director with the Dayton Daily News.

In 1933, he photographed six boys racing wooden contraptions down a hill and got the idea for the derby. The first year, the event attracted 330 participants and a crowd of 40,000.

After the 1934 derby, Chevrolet decided to sponsor the event nationally and persuaded Mr. Scott to be in charge of the race in Akron, Ohio.

"He was the father of the derby," said Jeff Iula, general manager and historian of the annual event.

Mr. Scott was inducted into the Soap Box Derby Hall of Fame in 1997. He left the Daily News in 1939 to join Chevrolet as an assistant advertising manager.

In 1953, Mr. Scott was called into a special meeting of 15 executives who were looking for a name for a new Chevrolet sports car then in the developmental stage.

The company wanted a name that began with a "C" that was not the name of an animal.

While perusing the C section of the dictionary, Mr. Scott stopped at the definition of "corvette," a speedy pursuit ship in the British Navy.

He suggested "Corvette" the next day, and companies officials adopted it.

Mr. Scott is survived by his wife, Clara Jane, of Kettering. Funeral services are on Wednesday.
