Edwin Shaffer, ex-council member
Forest Park super-volunteer Edwin C. Shaffer, a semi-retired computer systems engineer, had many accomplishments to be proud of, but he most treasured his relationship with his 17-year-old granddaughter.
"His greatest point of pride was his friendship with his granddaughter, Heather (Shaffer)," said Mr. Shaffer's wife of nearly 41 years, Dee Shaffer. "She and her grandfather were best buddies."
"Ed" Shaffer, a cardiac patient since 1992, died unexpectedly at home Thursday. The former Forest Park council member was 66.
It was his relationship with kids - beginning with informal counseling of some of his children's young friends - that led the father of four and grandfather of three to form his longtime relationship with Parkdale Home for Youth, which helps troubled girls. He was president of the home's board.
He also was head usher and member of the parish council at Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Greenhills, and treasurer of the Forest Park Democratic Club. He belonged to several groups and served on a range of city committees.
"If the city needed him for anything, he was there," said Council Member Brenda Mattox. "There's not that many people that stay that active, but he did."
After losing a five-way race for three at-large seats in 1991, the six-year council member didn't stop serving Forest Park. He was a co-chairman of its Quality of Life task force and also worked on its beautification commission and historical society.
"He was what I would term Mr. Forest Park," said Mayor Wayne Coates.
Mr. Shaffer, an Air Force captain during the mid-1950s, worked for Ohio National Financial Services more than 20 years, and continued with the company part time. He was a member of the American Legion, a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and recently was active with the Save Our City anti-charter-amendments organization.
He also is survived by grown children Thomas E. Shaffer, Sharon M. Patterson, Carol P. Shaffer and Michael W. Shaffer, all of greater Cincinnati; and grandchildren Heather D. Shaffer, Tiffany M. Patterson and Kristie Combs.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at the Vorhis Funeral Home in Springdale. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at his church. Memorial contributions may be made to Parkdale Home for Youth, 680 W. Sharon Road, Cincinnati, 45240.

Alma Ackerman, ran Glenway Chevy
Alma Sieve Ackerman steered Glenway Chevrolet through the ups and downs of the auto industry over the years, and she maneuvered her own cars - Chevys, of course - 76 years without a crash.
"The amazing thing was she never had an accident in the 76 years she drove," said her grandson, Mark Ackerman, who operates the business that Mrs. Ackerman's father, Alvin B. Sieve, started in 1919.
The business went from her father to her husband, Charles "Bud" Ackerman, and she took it over when he died in 1966. Later, the business was passed to her son, Donald Ackerman, and then to her grandson.
Mrs. Ackerman continued to visit the dealership daily, greeting customers and offering business advice, until her health failed about a year ago.
She died Friday at age 91.
Mrs. Ackerman was an impressive businesswoman who learned the lessons of the Great Depression and passed them to her son and grandson while she worked as the Price Hill dealership's secretary treasurer.
Her best advice? "The biggest thing is always watch your pennies and be conservative about your money," he said.
Her driving record and her business sense could be credited to the same thing, said her grandson: "She was just aware of everything around her - whether it was driving, business, or anything else."
She and her husband also operated Bud's Tavern at the dealership location from 1928 until 1937. She did the cooking - and the bartending. She also helped open the Sunset Theater in 1940 and the Covedale Theater in 1947.
Mrs. Ackerman was delighted her whole family, including her daughter Jean Lohman, sister Joan Berding, nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, continued to live near her in Cincinnati. They all survive her. She was preceded in death by a brother, Alvin "Bud" Sieve Jr.
