Glenn Sullivan, raised livestock
Before he retired in 1989, Glenn U. Sullivan of Vevay, Ind., spent years hauling cattle to Cincinnati's thriving livestock markets.
"Farmers would call on Sunday night and say they had cows to take into the city. You never knew what it was going to be," said Mr. Sullivan's daughter, Glenda Sullivan of Vevay, Ind.
"He'd go over all the communities picking them up and make a regular run of it (on Monday)," she said.
Mr. Sullivan died on Friday at the age of 86.
Mr. Sullivan had a 200-acre cattle farm near Center Square, Ind., about eight miles from Vevay on Indiana 56.
In addition to hauling cattle, he operated a fertilizer distributorship for years.
Mr. Sullivan would travel to Louisville, Ky., and sell fertilizer to farmers who would come from all around. "I used to go with him down there," Ms. Sullivan said.
"He was just a hard worker all his life," she said.

Ahmed Samawi, of Islamic Center
When motorists on Interstate 75 pass the Islamic Center of Greater Cincinnati in West Chester - or when worshipers enter its mosque - they are witnessing Ahmed Samawi's vision.
"Today we feel very sad because this man of vision has left us all of a sudden," said Dr. Tasleem Minhas, of the center's board of directors.
Mr. Samawi died Monday morning of an apparent heart attack at work. He was 65, and the owner and president of Mid-American Development Co., which he founded in the mid-1980s.
"Basically, he gave the last five to six years of his life to see the dream of an Islamic center come true," said Dr. Inayat Malik, a close friend and board member.
Yet Muslims on Monday said it wasn't the glorious building, but his vision for a center that reaches out to the area's Christian and Jewish communities, that is his greatest legacy.
Born in Damascus, Syria, Mr. Samawi understood the problems that misunderstandings could create among people of different religions.
"I think he saw what conflict could do, and he understood fully that the way to prevent that was to help people know each other and understand each other," Dr. Malik said. "In this society, he saw a potential for vilification of the religion of Islam because of misunderstanding."
The center's secondary mission - after serving its worshipers - is to reach out to Christians and Jews. The center holds open houses every month, and gives tours to churches, synagogues and other organizations.
When the idea of the center was conceived, "We had modest plans and designs," Dr. Malik said. "Nothing like we ended up with. He spent a fortune of his own."
After the center opened in late 1995, he continued working toward a vision of an Islamic artifacts museum, a library and a kindergarten-through-eighth-grade school on the property.
"I think all the religious communities in the area are the poorer for his loss," Dr. Malik said.
Mr. Samawi, of Indian Hill, leaves his wife, Ushi Samawi; sons, Hisham Samawi of Washington, D.C., and Ashraf Samawi, who divides his time between Cincinnati and Geneva, Switzerland; and daughters, Nada Abu Hassan of Jordan, Dana Samawi, Indian Hill, Janan Mitchell of Texas, and Laila Utley of Texas ; and a granddaughter.
A formal prayer service, called Slat Janaza, will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the center's mosque, followed by a 7:30 p.m. memorial service in the education building.
Memorials: Islamic Education Council, 8092 Plantation Drive, West Chester, Ohio, 45069.

Radio newsman Don Webb
Don Webb, a longtime Cincinnati broadcast announcer and newscaster, died Monday at age 71.
The Western Hills resident was described during his half century in broadcasting as having "one of radio's most resonant voices."
While Cincinnati was his turf, Mr. Webb often broadcast programs for the CBS, ABC and Mutual radio networks.
The longtime voice of WKRC-AM, he ultimately became the station's news director. He started in broadcasting at WPAY-AM in Portsmouth, Ohio, while still in high school.
In 1943, Mr. Webb was hired at the then-Crosley owned WSAI-AM and WLW-AM as a staff announcer.
While attending Xavier University, Mr. Webb was teased by friends about nightclubbing five nights a week. In fact, he was providing remote broadcasts for WSAI and WLW, and picking up the music from bands at the Lookout House, the Patio and the Restaurant Continentale.
In 1950, he joined the staff of WKRC.
Mr. Webb, a U.S. Navy veteran, leaves his wife Jane Egan Webb; daughters, Julie Webb Duffy, Mary Lynn Webb Sunderman, Laura Jane Webb and Katie Webb Blank; and son, Don Jr.; a brother, Roy; and seven grandchildren.
Visitation will be at 5 p.m. Thursday at Dalbert & Woodruff Funeral Home, Westwood. Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Westwood.
Memorials: Children's Hospital Research Hematology/Oncology or Our Lady of Lourdes Building Fund.
