Betty P. Shaffer

May 4, 1922 - Oct. 20, 2003

BUCYRUS -- Betty Pauline Shaffer 81, of 1170 West Mansfield St., Bucyrus, died Monday night at Heartland of Bucyrus. She was in failing health for several years.

She was born May 4, 1922, in Marion, Ohio, to Milford Winsor, and Marguerite (Mochel) Winsor Stansbury, both deceased.

On Jan. 25, 1963, she married Elwood M. Shaffer, who died Dec. 23, 1991.

She is survived by stepchildren Mary Elaine Daniels of Oveido, Fla., Rex Shaffer of Prospect, Ohio, Sherry Lee Seckel of Mount Gilead, Ohio, and Christina Marhover of Westerville, Ohio, numerous grand and stepgrandchildren, and numerous great-grand and stepgreat-grandchildren, and a sister, Mildred York of Bucyrus. She was preceded in by death by sons William and Jack Garner, brothers John and James Winsor, and sister Catherine Sexton.

In the late 1950s she worked at the Bucyrus Isaly's Store. After moving to Bucyrus at age 2, she attended Bucyrus Schools, and graduated from Bucyrus High School Class of 1940. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church on Walnut Street, and was past president of the Rural Letter Carriers Auxiliary.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at 1 p.m. in the Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home with Rev. Donald L. Neumann officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday morning from 11 a.m. until time of services.

The family suggests memorials may be made through the funeral home to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, or the donor's choice.

Eleanor M. Walker

MARION -- Eleanor M. Walker, 83, 1091 Marion-Cardington Road W., passed away at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, at Marion General Hospital.

Born May 24, 1920, in Orton, she was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Anna (Boyer) Taylor.

On Dec. 3, 1940, she married James E. Walker; he preceded her in death on April 21, 1997, in Marion.

A homemaker, she attended Grace Harvest Church.

She is also survived by a daughter, Peggy Kalfas of Marion; two brothers, Richard Taylor, Marion, George Taylor, Fulton; two sisters, Joan House and Cathy Bridges, both of Marion; granddaughter, Brandi Kalfas of Marion; three nephews, Sam House Jr., James House and Jamie Linn. She was preceded in death by two brothers, James and John Taylor, two sisters, Marguerite Makeever and Betty McClintock and a niece, Joyce Linn.

Public services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Caledonia Cemetery with Pastor Greg Masteller officiating. Private visitation will be held 9-11 a.m. Thursday at Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Directors.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or Covenant House.

Richard L. Rowley

MARION -- Funeral arrangements are pending with Boyd Funeral Home for Richard L. Rowley, age 57. He died at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, at Marion General Hospital.

Dorothy O. Sult

MARION -- Funeral arrangements are pending with the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger Funeral Home for Dorothy O. Sult, Marion. She died Thursday morning, Oct. 23, 2003, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus.

Charlie Blanton

MARION -- Charlie Blanton went to be with the Lord on Oct. 22, 2003, at the home of his son.

Born March 1, 1925, in Paintsville, Ky., he was the son of the late Callie and Alta (Leemasters) Blanton.

On Sept. 25, 1943, in Paintsville, he married Thelma (Fairchild) Blanton; she survives. They were married 60 years.

He was a chainman for Marion Power Shovel for 35 years, retiring in 1984.. He was a faithful member and deacon at the White Oaks Freewill Baptist Church.

He is also survived by a son, Tom (Jackie) Blanton of New Bloomington; a daughter-in-law, Judy Blanton of Marion; one brother and two sisters of Paintsville, Ky.; five grandchildren, Charles Blanton, Michael Blanton, Kimberly Green, Tracy Johnson, Tamara Blanton, all of Marion and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.

The funeral is 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at White Oaks Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Earl Tackett officiating. Burial is in Caledonia Cemetery. Friends may call 5-7 p.m. Friday at the White Oaks Freewill Baptist Church. Arrangements by Boyd Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Quality of Life Hospice.

Margaret Lake Boggs

MARYSVILLE -- Margaret Lake Boggs, formerly of Sutton, W.Va., died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Union County, Marysville. She was 102 years old.

Mrs. Boggs had been living since 1995 with her daughter and son-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Charles W. Holcomb of Richwood. In December 2001, she moved to the Gables at Green Pastures in Marysville.

Mrs. Boggs was born June 25, 1901, in Republican City, Neb., the daughter of Otis Kennedy and Nellie Brandt Lake of Lake Charles, La. She was a graduate of Virginia College, Roanoke, Va., and attended West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.Va.

She was a member of the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church in Gassaway, W.Va., an honorary member of the Sutton Woman's Club, a past member of Judy's Garden Club, and a member of the Presbyterian Women's Fellowship.

Prior to her marriage to Ralph C. Boggs of Gassaway, W.Va., on June 10, 1925, she taught domestic science in the high schools in Gassaway and Davis, W.Va.

Mrs. Boggs was a forward-looking business woman in an era when few women were accepted in managerial positions. Her long association with C. M. Singleton and Company is well known. Under her guidance and management the small business of the late 1920s expanded into one of Sutton's most modern and thriving businesses. The store later held a franchise with the Ben Franklin Co. Mrs. Boggs became a partner in the business in 1959 and continued in its management until her retirement in 1964.

Her husband, Ralph Colbert Boggs, Sr., her two sons, Thornton Lake Boggs and Ralph Colbert Boggs, Jr., a granddaughter, Margaret Boggs Hoover, and three brothers predeceased Mrs. Boggs.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Charles W.) Holcomb; two nephews, Kenneth B. Lake Jr. of Lake Charles, La., and Dr. Francis T. Lake of Gainesville, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Martha Campa of Cortland, William G. Boggs of Sutton, Dr. James W. (Judy) Holcomb of Flowery Branch, Ga., Ann Holcomb of New York, N.Y., Timothy B. Holcomb of Noblesville, Ind., Sally (Joseph) Wiley, and Mary (Michael) Price of Richwood; 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Davis Memorial Church in Gassaway, W.Va. Ballinger Funeral Home, Richwood, is in charge of local arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church, 206 Birch Street, Gassaway, WV 26624 or Richwood First United Methodist Church, 18 S. Fulton Street, Richwood, OH 43344.

Robert Elsmore Jr.

NEVADA -- Robert Elsmore Jr., 53, Nevada, died at 5:13 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held 3:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at Trinity Evangelical Methodist Church, Upper Sandusky, with the Rev. Derik Hines officiating. Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday at Bringman Clark & Co. Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Robert Elsmore Scholarship Fund or Upper Sandusky Athletic Boosters in care of Bringman Clark & Co. Funeral Home, P.O. Box 246, Upper Sandusky, OH 43351.
