Roena "Ms. Rose' Mundy, active in church
Roena Gloria Mundy spent her youth encouraging the importance of music at church, then turned to work with senior citizens as she became older.
Ms. Mundy, 91, a longtime member of Union Baptist Church, downtown, died Nov. 10. She was a retired beautician who once owned the Lakeview Charm Beauty Salon in Dayton, Ohio.
Ms. Mundy, affectionately known as "Ms. Rose," was born in Berea, Ky., loved music and formed youth and adult choirs at the Mt. Enon Baptist Church in Dayton. She later moved to Cincinnati and joined Union Baptist Church.
She graduated from Simmons University with an education degree and taught school in Central City, Ky. She left education to start the salon.
After she retired, Ms. Mundy began work as a senior companion for the elderly and continued that work until she was in her 80s.
She is survived by a daughter, Wanda Lewis Nolan, of Cincinnati; a sister, Edwina Anderson, of Dayton, Ohio; a stepson, Reuben Mundy of Cincinnati; three grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Virginia Morris, longtime dance instructor
Virginia Morris, who taught ballet to three generations of children, died Saturday. She was 79.
Ms. Morris taught children ballet at the Bardell School of Dance in Mount Washington, from 1950-79, and also taught ballroom dancing. She studied ballet in Cincinnati and New York.
She was a founding member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Forestville.
Ms. Morris leaves her husband Robert; sons, Richard, of Lake Oswego, Ore., and William, of Hilton Head, S.C.; daughter, Margaret Earing, of Valley Forge, Pa.; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Howard Ell, was farmer, college track star
Howard Ell, owner and operator of Ell Farm and a college track star, died Sunday after a tractor accident on his farm at age 81.
Sometimes dubbed a man before his time, Mr. Ell began organic farming on the Ell Farm established on Cincinnati-Columbus Road in 1941. Spurning pesticides, toxic chemical fertilizers and insecticides, Mr. Ell opened an organic health food store in 1952, long before health food stores became popular.
Mr. Ell had been born in Lebanon and was raised in Norwood.
The Ohio State University graduate was awarded a degree with honors in Floriculture and Horticulture in 1939. While at OSU, he participated at the National Collegiate Championships throwing the javelin, Mr. Ell also ran track at OSU with Jesse Owens, who later became an Olympic gold medal winner.
He is survived by sons, Bob and John Ell; three granddaughters and one great-great granddaughter.
Memorial services were scheduled for today at Shorten & Ryan Funeral Home, Mason.

Angela Leverone, WLW singer
Angela Bast Leverone, a founding member and past president of the West Hills Music Club, died Wednesday. She was 101.
Known for her singing voice, Mrs. Leverone not only sang in church choirs for years, but performed live on WLW radio on the evening program that later evolved into the "Moon River" show in the 1940s.
A longtime Price Hill resident and civic leader, Mrs. Leverone also was a founding member of the Price Hill Civic Association. A volunteer for many charities over the years, she was the Price Hill precinct captain for Red Cross during World War II and coordinated the Bank Street School shelter during the great flood of 1937.
Five years ago, she moved to Riverview Community.
Mrs. Leverone is survived by a son, Charles W. Leverone of Sarasota, Fla.; daughter, Mary Leverone Busener and daughter-in-law, Irene Beckman Leverone, both of Cincinnati; 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Services were early today at B.J. Meyer Sons Overlook Funeral Home, Price Hill; with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Antoninus Church, Covedale.
