Charles T. Martin, ad executive

Charles Thomas Martin, former president and owner of Stockton-West-Burkhart, once Cincinnati's largest advertising agency, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital, Fort Thomas, Ky.

He celebrated his 90th birthday last February, when 30 of his children and grandchildren held a party for him at the Metropolitan Club.

"He was a wonderful father and grandfather," said his daughter, Mary Carroll Gunderman.

The Covington native graduated from Holmes High School, studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy and at the Art Students League at the Grand Central Academy in New York.

He started his own advertising art studio in 1932 in Cincinnati, and later joined Stockton-West-Burkhart where he ultimately became owner, president and chairman of the board. The firm's major clients included the Cincinnati Gas & Electric Co., Cincinnati Bell Telephone, Central Trust Bank, U.S. Shoe Co. and the Andrew Jergens Co.

The agency pioneered in sponsoring and developing talent for early national and local radio shows. Among those talents were Walter Winchell, Rosemary and Betty Clooney, Red Barber, Waite Hoyt, Ruth Lyons and Bob Braun.

Ads directed by Mr. Martin won scores of first-place national and regional awards. Martin was instrumental in founding the Cincinnati Art Directors' Club in 1952.

He was a member of the St. Catherine of Siena Church in Fort Thomas and provided many volunteer art services for the Catholic press. He was a member of the Queen City Club, the Highland Country Club and many professional and civic organizations.

Olive Hoinke leaves city 'classic' legacy

Olive Hoinke was co-founder of the world-renowned Hoinke Classic Bowling Tournament, and served as its treasurer for half a century.

But truth be told, she was a better golfer than bowler.

She played three times a week - Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays - at Western Hills Country Club. "She could play in the 85-90s, which was pretty good," said her son, Erwin "Erv" Hoinke Jr.

She also was a good bowler - with an average of 155-160 in the days before improved equipment and modern bowling facilities made higher averages more common - and the family name was destined to become synonymous with bowling, not golf.

Mrs. Hoinke died Sunday at Mount Healthy Christian Home. She was 92.

"She was a very kind and caring person," her son said. "She was just a good, honest, hard-working "Dutchman' - Norwegian, really," he said. "She was a good ol' girl, and everyone liked her."

Eleven years after she and Erwin C. "Erv" Hoinke Sr. married in 1929, they opened Hoinke Glenway Lanes, whose huge, rounded roof was a landmark in East Price Hill and only a short walk from the original Skyline Chili.

"The Hoinke (Classic) started somewhere around 1941 as a war effort," said their son.

In the early days, the tournament awarded war stamps and war bonds as its prizes.

In 1961, the couple took over the 48-lane Western Bowl, where the tournament now is held.

In 1970, they closed Hoinke Lanes and expanded Western Bowl to 68 lanes.

The 46-week tournament runs from late January to around Thanksgiving and is in its 57th year. Prize money has grown to $2.5 million. It is the largest individually owned bowling competition in the world.

Mr. Hoinke died in 1981. Mrs. Hoinke also leaves four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, with an eighth due any day.

Arrangements: Radel Funeral Home, Delhi Township. Memorials: American Cancer Society.

Hazel M. Reik, never missed a Reds game

During baseball season, Hazel M. Reik was a fixture in the press room overlooking Riverfront Stadium. But she wasn't a reporter.

She was the mother of William J. Reik, a limited partner of the Cincinnati Reds. She dressed in red before every home game and listened to sports radio whenever the team played out of town.

"A Cincinnati Reds fan - that's what she did full-time," said Reik, of New York City. "She never missed a home game until she got ill."

Mrs. Reik, of Fort Thomas, Ky., died Monday. She was 86.

Mrs. Reik was a homemaker and a longtime volunteer at St. Luke Hospital East. Her husband, William J. Reik, preceded her in death. She also leaves a grandson and three great-grandchildren.
