Expert in Sheppard trial dies
TWINSBURG, Ohio - Mary Cowan, a blood expert used by prosecutors in the 1954 murder conviction of Dr. Sam Sheppard, has died. She was 91.
Miss Cowan died Monday at Meridia Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights, Ohio.
She was one of the last surviving assistants to Cuyahoga County Coroner Sam Gerber, who said she was convinced Sheppard killed his wife, Marilyn, in the case that helped inspire "The Fugitive" television series.
Sheppard always insisted that a "bushy-haired intruder" killed his wife and knocked him unconscious in a struggle. He served 10 years in prison before the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the verdict, ruling that reckless media coverage had violated his rights. Sheppard was acquitted at a retrial.
Miss Cowan said in a 1996 interview that modern methods of blood testing show far more than possible in 1954.
"There's no one thing that you ever hang a case on," she said. "It is how all the things fit together - or seem to fit together. And there was nothing to point away from Sam Sheppard."
Miss Cowan was the leading medical technologist in the county coroner's office where she worked for 56 years.
Services will be Saturday.
