Thomas B. Wess, engineer and volunteer

Thomas B. Wess of Finneytown, a retired design engineer at General Electric and dedicated community volunteer, died Monday. He was 70.

He received his engineering training at the University of Cincinnati and was licensed by the state of Ohio in 1957. He worked for GE until 1990.

Mr. Wess was a U.S. Army veteran and was active in church, community and civic groups. Last year, he directed the Ohio River flood disaster relief program for the St. Vincent de Paul Society in conjunction with the American Red Cross.

A past president of St. Vincent De Paul at St. Vivian Church, Finneytown, Mr. Wess also was a Grand Knight of St. Patrick's Knights of Columbus in 1976 and 1977. Three years ago he received St. Vincent De Paul's "Top Hat Award" for his service to the poor.

He also volunteered with St. Vincent's Food Pantry, Ozanam Center, Drake Center and Epic House. He was a chaplain at the Justice Center and co-founded Little Brothers-Friend of the Elderly Cincinnati chapter.

He leaves his wife, Jeanette Miles Wess; sons, Bruce Wess, of Burlington, Ky., Dr. Michael Wess of Norfolk, Va., and Thomas B. Wess II of Cincinnati; daughters, Nancy Ward of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., Mary Sandra Yanuss and Gail Hall, both of Cincinnati; sister, Ruth Stentz of Cincinnati and six grandchildren.

Mass: 10 a.m. Friday at St. Vivian Church, Finneytown. Visitation: 6 p.m. today at Imwalle Memorial Funeral Home, St. Bernard. Memorials: St. Vincent De Paul Society or Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly.

Leonard J. Baynum, sportsman

After retiring in October, Leonard J. "Bud" Baynum bought a boat that he planned to use on frequent fishing excursions with his nephews and grandchildren.

The avid sportsman from Covington went fishing every week, said his niece, Candy Herndon. "Fishing and his family, that's what he loved," she said.

Mr. Baynum, 63, died before he could enjoy his retirement to its fullest. He died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.

Mr. Baynum worked for 30 years at RADAC Co. in Dayton, where he was in inventory control. Prior to that, he worked for eight years as an assistant parts manager for a Buick dealership in Covington.

Raised in Covington, Mr. Baynum went to Holmes High School and married his wife, Emily E. Baynum, in 1959.

He also leaves a son, Larry Dailey of Union, Ky.; daughters, Emily E. Lawson of Hamilton, Ohio, and Mary Jo Mullen of Pasadena, Calif.; a brother, William R. Baynum of Latonia; a half-brother, Leonard J. Baynum of Hamilton, Ohio; a half-sister, Margie L. Rose of Dayton, Ohio; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Fort Wright, Ky., 41011; or American Diabetes. Association, 721 W. Main St., Louisville, Ky., 40202.

Christopher and James Frank

Funeral services for brothers Christopher and James Frank will be 3 p.m. Monday at Glen Este High School.

Christopher, 15, and James, 18, of Mount Carmel, were critically injured Tuesday in a car crash on Interstate 275 in Clermont County. James died Wednesday morning. Christopher died Thursday night.

Their parents, Chris and Mike Frank, have donated organs and tissues from both boys and spoke at an emotional assembly Friday at the high school about their decision and their tragedy.

Still, they said, they found some comfort in the fact that they believe the boys now are together, as they were in life.

"James waited for Christopher so he wouldn't be afraid," Mrs. Frank told the students. She also said the organ donations possibly saved other parents from the pain of losing a child.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at T.P. White & Sons Funeral Home, 2050 Beechmont Ave., Mount Washington .

Janet K. Hake, retired from McAlpin's

Janet K. Hake of Milford had a long career with McAlpin's, working at its Kenwood store in linens, china and furniture, and at its Signature store on Montgomery Road at the time of her retirement.

Mrs. Hake died Thursday at age 67.

She was the mother of 11 children and a former board member for the Clermont Northeastern School District.

"She did everything with such enthusiasm," said her daughter, Kathryn Kelly of Covedale. "With all of her family and friends, as a dispatcher for the volunteer fire department, and in her work at McAlpin's - everyone talks about her energy."

Mrs. Hake grew up in O'Bryonville, where she attended Holy Angels School and St. Mary's High School. For the past 36 years, she lived in the Milford area and attended St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church.

Other survivors include her husband of 45 years, Charles E. Hake Sr.; sons, Charles Jr. and Richard, both of West Chester, and Michael of Milford; daughters, Nancy and Elizabeth Hake and Julia Kurtz, all of West Chester, Susan Grdina of Milford, Mary Jo Voto of Goshen, Caroline Pollitt of Vanceburg, Ky., and Ann Benkert of Aurora, Ill.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Buckwheat Road, Mt. Repose. Burial will be at Spring Grove Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Evans Funeral Home in Milford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Burns Institute, 3229 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229.

John R. Funke was retired executive

John R. Funke, 56, of Town and Country, Mo., formerly of Erlanger, Ky., died after suffering an aneurysm Wednesday at his second residence in Mineola, Mo.

He was a retired vice president and chief financial officer for  Jefferson Smurfit Corp., St. Louis, Mo., and worked 12 years for Hoerner Waldorf Corp., Middletown, Ohio.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen Ryan Funke; sons, John R. Funke Jr. of Edwards, Colo., and Thomas Funke of Town and Country, Mo.; daughters, Nancy Funke Cassaday of St. Peters, Mo., and Katie Funke of Town and Country, Mo.; brothers, William Funke of Demossville, Paul Funke of Louisville and Lawrence Funke of Baltimore; and a sister, Dottie Funke Hayes of Erlanger.

Mass of Christian burial will be Monday at St. Clement Church, St. Louis, Mo. Bopp Chapel Funeral Home, Kirkwood, Mo., is in charge. Memorials are suggested to John R. Funke Charitable Foundation, 1198 Clayton Place Drive, St. Louis, Mo. 63131.
