Rev. James Hutchinson, civil rights activist

The Rev. James Hutchinson was a social activist in a time of social unrest in Cincinnati.

He pastored First Unitarian Church, Reading Road and Linton Street, Avondale, from 1965 to 1971.

"He was very concerned at the time about how blacks were being treated," said Julie Underwood, who was president of the congregation during Rev. Hutchinson's pastorate. "That whole social area was a great concern of his."

Rev. Hutchinson died Sunday in Falmouth, Maine, at the age of 73.

A native of Maine, he studied at Tufts University and Harvard Divinity School.

"He was a very intellectual minister," said David Jackson, music director at First Unitarian Church. "We was just a wealth of information and a stickler for perfect grammar."

While a pastor in Cincinnati, Rev. Hutchinson was active with the Avondale Community Council and as a civil rights advocate.

"He was a very active person and very well-loved," Ms. Underwood said.

He was a believer in separation of church and state and preached against public funding for Cincinnati hospitals run by religious groups.

He was a member of the American Humanist Association.

He went on to serve as interim pastor for several Unitarian Universalist churches across the country.

He returned to Cincinnati in 1980 to pastor another Unitarian Universalist congregation for a short time.

Mr. Theiring, 83, died Saturday in Sun City, Ariz., where he and his late wife moved after retirement in the late 1960s.

Robert Goodman, author, photographer

Robert B. Goodman, an author, photographer, award-winning publisher and a pioneer in desktop publishing, died recently in Honolulu. Mr. Goodman, who suffered from cancer, was 65.

The native Cincinnatian graduated from Ohio University and later freelanced for Life, Fortune, Sports Illustrated and the Saturday Evening Post. He became the youngest photographer ever employed by National Geographic, where his assignments included photographing the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and living under the Red Sea as an aquanaut with Jacques Cousteau.

In 1967 Mr. Goodman published the first of more than 120 books, many of which celebrated the beauty of Hawaiian culture. One of his publications, "Within a Rainbowed Sea," was selected by Ronald Reagan as a Presidential Gift of State to the Emperor of Japan.

Mr. Goodman, fascinated by technology, created the first full-color coffee table books ever made entirely with desktop publishing tools. "WhaleSong," published in late 1986, was featured in a page-one story in the New York Times, which called it, "the most elegant book produced on a personal computer."

Mr. Goodman once wrote, "I am endlessly curious about how things work, who figured them all out . . . Human beings seem to create their own limitations, then cheer wildly when a breakthrough appears."

Along with his books, Goodman left another legacy: his eyes. His corneas, donated to the Organ Donor Center of Hawaii, have saved the sight of two people.

Mr. Goodman leaves his wife, Lorie of Honolulu; son, David, of Honolulu; daughter, Maile, of Chicago; brother, Gary, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and his father, Winkler Goodman, of North Avondale.
