Charles Satterwhite, Mahoney trial judge
Charles Satterwhite, a respected Northern Kentucky judge who presided over the trial of the man convicted in the nation's deadliest drunken driving crash, has died at age 50.
Satterwhite, who had a double lung transplant nearly two years ago, died Tuesday at Jewish Hospital in Louisville from complications from infections. Satterwhite was a circuit court judge in Owen, Carroll and Grant counties, and continued to work despite a life-long affliction with cystic fibrosis.
Satterwhite is perhaps best known for presiding over the 1989 criminal trial of Larry Mahoney, the Owen County man who drove drunk and killed 27 people on Interstate 71 just outside Carrollton in May 1988, in the nation's worst drunken driving accident.
'He was a wonderful judge, and he was very fair,' said Grant Circuit Clerk Betty Lawrence, who has known Satterwhite more than 20 years. 'He treated everybody like the way he wanted to be treated.'
Satterwhite lived and practiced law in Owen County before moving to the district court bench in 1978, when the state revamped its judicial system. Six years later, he ran for and was elected to the circuit court seat.
Satterwhite is survived by his wife, Paula, and his daughter, Sara. Funeral arrangements are pending at McDonald Funeral Home in Owenton.

Dr. Charles L. Johnson, allergist
Family members found stacks of quotes from the Scriptures written on prescription pads in Dr. Charles L. Johnson's desk.
His wife and daughter said those scraps of paper best describe the man who was deeply devoted to his medical practice, his family and his church.
Dr. Johnson, 59, of Indian Hill, died of heart disease Wednesday.
A native of New York state, he was an allergist with four offices in Ohio and Indiana.
'He enjoyed medicine as a challenge intellectually and as a service to people,' said Suzanne Peabody Johnson, his wife. 'He liked working with people and being around people - it was the center of his life.'
Dr. Johnson was a 'devoted physician' who cared about his profession, said Dr. William Niemes, his medical partner.
'I looked up to him because of his compassion,' Niemes said. 'He just enjoyed seeing people and helping them in any way he could.'
Dr. Johnson had offices at Bethesda Base Hospital and in Tri-County, Anderson and Richmond, Ind. He was a member of the Cincinnati Academy of Medicine, the Ohio State Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the Cincinnati Allergy Society and several other professional organizations.
A daughter, Rachel Smith, who lives in Cincinnati, said her father made time every summer for family trips back to his birthplace in Jamestown, N.Y., for a family reunion.
'He was a workaholic, but he loved it,' she said. 'He was always happy and cheerful.'
Besides his wife and daughter Rachel, survivors include daughters, Amy Johnson of Selmer, Tenn., and Emily Smart of Denver; son, Gregory Johnson of Sacramento, Calif.; and brothers, Ralph Johnson of Arcade, N.Y., and Donald Hamm- Johnson of Albany, Ga.
A memorial will be held Jan. 9 at the Cincinnati Friends Meeting, 8075 Keller Road, Indian Hill.
Gilligan Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Memorials should be made to Cincinnati Friends Meeting, Life Center organ recovery agency, or the American Heart Association.
